Don't try to cast your voodoo magic on me. Most uppers cost more then my full AR did.

If its just a little 556 AR then throw a low power scope on it or reddot with magnifier and call it a day.
If you are wanting a long range (200yd+) then get a decently powerful scope. I custom built my black rain billet 6.8spcII and cant really say its a tack driver at 200yds only because i havent tried yet but at 100yds it is and i run a 4-12x40 vortex viper.
I also have a billet dpms ar10 in .338federal and as useless as it might be but i run a 6.5-20x44PA vortex viper on it and i love the power it has! It will reach out a pretty good distance!

I think I will put a red dot with 3 or 4x on a flip to side mount. Now I just need to figure out which red dot or eotech. Ugh and once again so many options.

Go with your original idea of a1-4 or the newer 1-6s. The Eotech/magnifier combo is expensive, cumbersome and at least as heavy as a scope. I have a Burris MTAC on one of my ARs and everyone that has shot it has loved it. At anything under 100 yards it is nearly as good as a red dot but has no trouble ringing steel at 400 yards.

Well not an eotech more along the lines of a Vortex Strike fire and a off brand magnifier

I have an EOtech XPS 2 with EOtech 3x magnifier, a Leupold VX-R 1.24-4 and one in 3-9x40 both in PEPR mounts, and an Aimpoint Comp M3 on different uppers. I have tried lots of cheaper scopes before ending where I have, including a Vortex (not the RDS). While I do not shoot 3 gun, I do hunt. I would say the best choice is the best glass you can afford. If you skimp on the magnifier, you will have issues shooting yotes at dawn/dusk/night. I really like the Leupold VX-Rs a lot. The glass is good and the Firedot is great at night. You can find the 1.25-4 just above $400 if you look around and if you don't need the target turrets or mil reticle. Great option IMHO. The EOtech is great (heavier than a scope for sure) and I can shoot 200yds easily with magnifier on, but the glass is not as good at night. The Aimpoint is good for quick shots, but the dot is too big to shoot long and accurate.
Edit.
I see you also shoot deer and antelope, so I this is maybe not standard 5.56? FWIW the VX-R 3-9x40 is on a 6.8spc and works great there. I use it for hog/deer/whatever is bigger than coyote.

I'm in the same boat myself. I've got the strikefire and it's a great RDS, but I need more magnification because my eyes aren't great.

I can "both eyes open" a 2x scope pretty good. Your scope doesn't have to be exactly 1x on the bottom end for fast target acquisition. A good thing too; since many 1x variables aren't really 1x. Honestly with a little practice you can throw a gun up and aim instinctively and be reasonably on-target (good enough for a kill-shot) at 100 yards.
