I agree with sticking to the ironsights and just improving your skill. I have messed around with those primary arms sights and its hit or miss. The guy running the company is super awesome about getting you taken care of if you have problems but you never have to worry about the batteries runnin out on your irons. Plus if there is a nuclear blast close by the emp wont take em out, even though your a crispy critter

I disagree. As far as the heat and the pounding go,I have a AMD 65 with a Ultimak rail and a Lucid HD7 on it ,and I have had no problems with it.

Go to Warriortalk.com and ask them how long your set up will last under serious heat. They seem to think the Aimpoint is the way to go. And I tust them big time. If its working for u great!

aimpoint micro and PA Microdot style seems like it would be the best for an AK

I was in the same dilemma and went with the PA micro dot instead of the Green reflex from PA because the micro is water proof and the reflex is not. A little rain can do damage .

red dot would improve the AK a lot since the irons arent anywhere near as good as an ARs. AK is still combat accurate from 0-200 yards, not as good as an AR but it does the job.

Optic on my AK74 works for me
For me it's a no brainer. My AK74 (5.45x39) with the Leatherwood 1x4 optic is a 2 moa weapon even with my advancing age and eye glasses. I can shoot 2" or smaller groups at 100 yards day in and day out... and that's with mil-surp ammo. Someone younger, with better eyes, and with better ammo would definitely improve upon that. I would guess that the right shooter with the right ammo would be consistently under 1.5 moa.
My AK74 has a Texas Weapon Systems rail, a Burris PEPR mount, and a Leatherwood CMR 1x4 lighted reticle scope. I'm a very happy camper. Even with me behind the working end of the rifle, I would not want to be the downrange target.
So the answer to your question is that the cost of the above setup is modest in the scheme of things. I don't know if I paid "a lot" by your standards or not. I do know that I did not pay too much.

I have been looking at ghost rings.
I have a side mount and a 3-9 mildot (I have yet to zero because I am just not into it)
I may put the scope on my .22 and ghost ring the AK.
