I agree....go with the 870 but in a different set-up. They make 4 and 6 shot side saddles. If you go with a full stock you can get a 5 shot elastic sleeve as well.

The 870HD (express home defense model) holds 6+1, 6 shot side saddle, and 5 shot stock saddle. That is plenty for one encounter

i have the remmy 870 express synthetic 6+1. I had looked at both the Mossy 500 and this at the local store and the remmy was slightly more expensive but the fit and feel was better than the mossberg IMO. Smoother more solid feeling slide and action etc

Go with a solid stock. If the bad guy gets in too close, a solid stock will let you smash him hard where a collapsible or folding stock will just break or move.

Agreed.

All I want/need is a HD shotgun that will live beneath the bed. No plans for hunting/skeet/anything else.

After a lot of consideration and investigation around the net, I decided that I did not need the resilience of a field gun and was nearly ready to buy a basic Mossburg 500 but then found out about their entry level Maverick range of shotguns which have had good user reports. Pretty much the same shotgun, built to a price, but miles better than the equivalent Chinese crap out there.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a Maverick anywhere and added myself to BudsGunShop.com back-in-stock notification service. I received an email from them this morning - they just got them back in stock today - so about 15 minutes ago ordered a Maverick 88 Security ... $195 delivered! This will work just great for me and leaves me more money for a concealed carry piece I want too.

Action: Pump
Gauge: 12 GA
Barrel Length: 20"
Capacity: 7 + 1
Chamber: 3"
Length: 41"
Weight: 7 Lbs
Drop: 1 1/2" @ Comb & 2 1/8" @ Heel
Stock: Black Synthetic
Finish: Blue

Second .. If it's just gonna sit by the bed ... It's hard to beat the Maverick 88.

Additionally ... Don't buy a pistol grip only shotty unless you intend to put a folder/regular stock on it anyway ... They look cool, and can be fun ... But the fun wears off fairly quickly.

Personally ... I'd look for something like this.

Model 500 "3 In 1" Home Def, Hunting, Cruiser
CALIBER:12 Gauge
STOCK:Black Synthetic, Checkered & Pistol Grip Kit
CAPACITY:2 3/4" 5+1
CHOKES:28" Multi Choke (F,MOD,IC) 18 1/2" Cylinder Bore
CHAMBER:3"

The price in my area is under $300 out the door tax included.
It takes about 1 minute to change barrels, and IMO is one of the best deals around.

This looks like somthing else to consider, I appreciate all the comments. I agree on the stock thing, it was just a particular one I ran across.

If it's HD only, it's hard to beat a maverick 88 simply because of the price. They are probably the best value in shotguns for that type of thing. I have stated before that's actually what I was trying to track down, but found my 1300 on clearance for less than I was likely to find an 88. They will all fit the bill, but the value goes to the 88.
