Just applied for my C&R...

assuming I don't get denied ...what is the first gun I should get. I want a rifle. Nothing too expensive to buy or shoot.

1) Get your license to MidwayUSA, Brownells, etc. for dealer pricing.
2) Mosin @ $80 + 5.62x54r ammo = least expensive solution.
3) K31 + 7.5x55 Swiss ammo = most accurate for the money.
Enjoy.

SKS, while you still can. You will quickly realize that the temptation to buy more surplus guns is irresistable, and you will be consumed with acquiring as many milsurps as possible.

Trust me.

I plan to send the license off for the dealer discounts. Why do you say SKS while you still can? I don't reload at the moment...which one is best one with easily found (hopefully cheap) ammo?

+1, except for changing the order of K31 first and Mosin next.

What sort of rifles (and other guns) can you expect to get with a C&R license?

And any ammo discounts with it?

K31 will be tho most expensive with ammo, but has ballistics almost matching 308, With open sights I've put 4 shots into a 3" circle with mine, and I've got older eyes that are failing and am not a great shot by any means. Plus K31's are generally much better taken care of internally(the bores and action). Don't get me wrong, I like my Mosin, but the K31 I have will outshoot most of the Garands at my range.

I second this with the quick correction that the ammo is 7.62x54R--I'm sure it was just a typo, but I didn't want the OP to go looking for ammo he's not going to find.

I say SKS while you still can, because if we get a president Obama, (God help us), I could see them getting the ban, where as no one is so quick to ban old bolt actions, like a Mosin-Nagant, or a K-31. 7.62x39 is also relatively cheap to shoot, not as cheap as some milsurp calibers, but cheap nonetheless.

Yes, you can get discounts on ammo from some dealers who accept your C&R license. With my C&R, I've bought a Garand, Mosin-Nagant 91/30, a Yugo SKS, a Russian SKS, a Tokarev TT33, and a CZ-82. There are others you can buy. The ATF has a whole list of C&R eligible guns.
