I filled out my C&R form and then got bummed when it said take to local sheriff to look it over or something to the effect. My sheriff voted against a local gun range build program due to "It may cause toxic gasses to escape from beneath the earth". Seriously.

So it sits completely filled out on my desk. I wanted a TT33 Tokarev at C&R price baaaaaaaaaaaad.

Not too bad...I'll have to check it out. Moving to a not so gun friendly city in a few months, so maybe try and squeeze it in before the move.

You just need to give them a courtesy copy. You don't need their approval. I just mailed mine to the Chief of Police.

How's that for timing? As I was posting on this thread, my first "official" C&R purchase (using the license) showed up: a 1936 Tula-made Nagant revolver. It looks to be in nice shape....once I figure out how to disassemble this silly thing to check the bore I'll post a couple pics.

Excactly. The BATFE approves or disapproves your application. The CLEO has no say in the matter. You simply mail them a copy as a courtesy. I mailed mine to the Sheriff of my parish, (that's county for the rest of ya'll).

Really?! Wow ok. I tried doing some google searches on the steps for it when I got to that part but couldn't find anything. I'll go ahead and send it in then.

1 more thing, do you guys remember writing down your credit card information on the CLEO sheet? Why does the CLEO need to know my credit card info?!

Okay...got it all figured out. I started a new thread about it to end my hi-jack of this one.

CLEO does not need your cc number. Only the BATFE, if you choose to pay by credit card. Send the CLEO form certified mail, and include a letter explaining that you are applying for a collector's license, and not a license to do business, and explain that he doesn't have to do anything. AR15.com has a great example letter to send to the CLEO in their C&R forum. I used it in a slightly modified form for my CLEO letter. I suggest you check it out. Lots of great info in there.

Look at this way...there approx 580,000 Swiss K31 rifles made, ever. There were over 37,000,000 Mosin Nagants made. That's almost 64 Mosin rifles for every 1 K31.

Yes, the ammo is more expensive. The best I can do for reloadable, boxer primed brass ammo is about $0.63/round online, and that's without a dealer discount and it's without buying a huge bulk order. Mosin ammo, even if you stay away from corrosive ammo, can be had for less than half of that. The K31 is more accurate though.

Also, with the K31, you should be able to get one with a tag under the butt plate with the contact information, age, and unit the soldier to whom the rifle was issued to. Can't do that with the Mosin.

My hand-picked K31 with all matching numbers, walnut stock, and troop ID tag in the butt plate is arriving tomorrow.

I will get a Mosin at some point, but the K31 is my first milsurp.
