practical difference in barrel length...
been bored as hell this summer and trying to sell stuff on craigslist to make my way to a 22 autoloader rifle. Looking at the ruger 10/22 i notice the standard carbine is 18.5" barrel, and they make a compact version with a 16.5" barrel.
from my local shop, the carbine is 193, the compact is 221. Whats the practical difference here? I assume that the longer barrel will be a little bit more accurate, but i'm just wondering...

Longer barrel should be a little more accurate because you have a longer sight distance (with iron sights). Also you will have a little more velocity with a longer barrel. Doubt if either of those would be that noticable. I would pick the one you like.

I have the shorter now, used to have the longer and cannot tell the difference in accuracy at all. The shorter will still put 5 shots into a quarter or smaller at 50 yards with good ammo. By the way, with ammo it is a trial and error thing with a 22. Get several different types and try them all, with cleaning the barrel between the types too. What works great in one of my 22's isn't too great in others. I can shoot the Remington Golden Bullets all day out of my 10/22 and be accurate as heck, but with my old 10/22 they didn't do squat and were all over the place. That one loved the CCI mini mags for some reason.
