Very good advice.

When picking up a firearm that you have not touched in a long time or are unfamiliar with - always check it's action for clear.

It takes only a second...but its absolutely vital you make it a habit!

But even 'here' we can all use to hear it as many times as possible. You shouldn't be surprised.

Anyone can make a mistake, all it takes is 1 second of lapse (as impossible as it sounds, yes, even you! )

In fact, as soon as you assume something is irrevocably drilled in, that's usually when you make a mistake.

Never stated it couldn't happen to me. But....

Believe you will, believe you won't....you'll probably be correct.

Yea I guess you could say it's kinda a Karma thing.. I didn't mean it in a quarlsome way at all... just don't want the same thing happening to you or to anyone else for that matter... I just truley believe alot of folks, unfortunatly, eat crow. Or blow off their pinkie's... or their wifes foot (I.E. ME, not the pinky, the foot).... even up to that day, I was extremely adiment on gun safety... And, all the talking and advice could not of prepeared me for shooting my wife in the foot with a high power rifle.

I think someone in here said it perfect... 1 second. 1 second of lapse, BOOM. Hits you like a ton of boulders. And you NEVER forget the sight of you or your love one spilling blood... I spent three days and took 2 gallons of vinegar to get all the blood and plasma up from where my wife was shot... still have the hole in the baseboard as a reminder of just how quick your "perfect" safety record can get ****in trashed.... it's real, it's scary, we're humans

You know, I hear you guys. But I have to believe you are in a very small club. Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm in a very small club.

Someone once wrote here that people who have ND's are no different than motorcycle riders who fall...... it's going to happen sooner or later. Sorry but I call BS to that. Do your odds go up if your job involves loading and unloading a weapon everyday. You bet. Can you get complacent? Certainly. Do these things have to occur? No.

Sure an ND could happen with a lapse, but how many rules do you have to violate before someone is injured? At least two right?

Be safe. Be methodical. Do not form "routines" that involve triple racking or masking tape or what ever. Just follow the rules and think about every step.

That's all I'm saying.

I was taught these set of rules.

1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you are ready to fire.
4. Be sure of your target as well as the surroundings and beyond.

Basically the same rules just slightly different wording.

I know of a very good instructor who put fired a round into his vest while dry practicing. He was dry practicing and stopped and loaded up and was getting ready to leave. The phone rang he spoke on the phone for a few moments and went back to dry firing but it was not dry. Fortunately he was using his vest as a back stop. Even a momentary lapse can cause serious problems.
