Sig P6

I figured I'd share my new toy. I picked up a surplus Sig P6 from dansammo.com. After shipping and the FFL transfer fee, it came out to $290. I could have spent an extra $20 and got a refinished one instead, but I don't mind the holster wear as it gives the gun character. I'll probably leave it as is to preserve the "history". It came with 2 magazines.

The markings mean that this was made in March 1979 and issued to the Nordrhein-Westfallen Police Department. PW ARMS is the importer. There are German Eagle markings on the barrel, frame and slide.

Knife is a Kershaw Avalanche if you're wondering. As you can see there is holster wear on the slide but no rust on the actual metal. Gun is super easy to field strip. Just lock the slide back and rotate that rectangular piece downwards 90 degrees. Then slowly release the slide forward. Spring and guide come out and then the barrel. Reverse the steps to assemble.

Internals looked in very good condition. Barrel bore was had very nice ridges on the rifling. The rails looked like the pistol was hardly shot. The wear on the slide looks like it was from the decocker so I'm thinking that the gun was loaded/unloaded a lot and the decocker was used to bring it back to DA.

Here are the accessories I got with it. Belt holster, 3 magazine carriers (incidentally my EMP magazine works on them, but the one with the snap doesn't close on it), and the cleaning kit. The gun came in a cardboard box.

I can't wait to get to the range to give it a whirl. The SN starts with an M so it should handle HP if I choose to use it as a SD weapon and not just a range toy. It's going to be hard to oust the EMP as my carry gun though. EMP holds one more round than the P6 and it's a slimmer pistol all around. Height is about the same but I have tritium sights on the EMP.

DA pull is really hard but the SA pull is pretty nice. This is my first DA/SA gun to own so I'll learn the mechanics. Also first gun with a decocker. Well hell, it's my first Sig I've shot SIGs before, just didn't like the double stack ones 'cause the grips felt fat for my small hands. The single stack 9 is pretty darn comfortable.

Nice - I like mine and have also decided to just leave it as is. It works fine, is accurate and feels good in my hand. The only surprise was the feed ramp is not polished which I thought strange but then the only other pistol I own is the XD.

This is a little fun I had at 25 yrds left to right with the XD9sc, a borrowed Sig 380 and the Sig 225/P6. Sorry for the crummy picture but you can see that
there isn't much wrong with the P6 even in my hands.

Did you guys have luck with shooting HP rounds through it? From what I've read, as long as your SN starts off with at least a K then it should be fine with HP. Mine is starts with a M

I've heard that about the S/N thing and running JHP's. I have 3 P6's and they all run JHP's just fine. Two are the older ones that aren't supposed to run them. THe only problems I've ever had with any of them is when I used a Pro-Mag. I have 4 Pro-Mags for them, the other 3 work fine but one gives me all kinds of troubles-go figure.

Very nice pistol!

You'll love shooting the P6. I have its Swiss made cousin - the Montage Suisse P225 and love it. Very accurate and very well made.

Mine too had some holster wear but the internals were pristine. My Swiss beauty also has an "M" serial number and 6 digits afterwards. This puts it in the early 80s range.

(The Swiss versions differ from the W. German guns with a heel mag release and they are marked "P225 Montage Suisse" instead of P6. Essentially..the same pistol in every other way, but built in SIG's Hammerli plant for the Swiss Police)

Try it with hollowponts and see. My Swiss P225 ate up some Winchester 115gr hps and two 147 grain hps (Hydra Shoks and SXTs). Some say their P6 will not feed hps...you really need to try it and see. Mine eats everything I throw in it (typical of every SIG I have ever shot or owned).

Let us know how it shoots...chances are, you'll love it.

Yeah...I never thought I'd be so jazzed about a single stack 9mm with a heel mag release but I love this little gun!

I took it to the range this past Saturday and put about 150 rounds through. It's a great shooter. In DA, I shoot about 2" high and in SA about 1". The patterns are good though so it's just a matter of learning how this gun points compared to my EMP and XD. It fed reliabley all day for me.

My buddy who got a P6 from the same guy did have one issue with his gun. The gun cycled after he shot it, but it didn't chamber the last round. The Slide locked forward, but when he pulled the trigger and the hammer dropped it didn't go bang. He racked the slide and no cartridge was expelled and nothing loaded in the chamber but there was still one round in the mag. We figured it was just a weak magazine spring that didn't push the last cartridge up fast enough.

Thanks for the history brickboy240

Very nice! I went the same route myself and purchased from Dan. Mine was in basically the same VG condition as yours. I decided to apply a Duracoat finish to my P6 and it turned out very nice I think. I have ordered some wood grips from Dennis Maschalinko for the pistol that will do it for this litle project. His grips are truely works of art and I have some of his grips on my Makarov and CZ82.

That's a great looking finish Pirate. Was the P6 easy to disassemble for the coating? Those grips look fantastic and they are reasonably priced for the quality.

Thanks, I have Duracoated several firearms over the last few years and this project turned out well. The P6 is easy to field strip and thats all you need to do the apply the finish. The key is to throughly clean the metal before you start appling the finish. Duracoat has a special quick drying cleaner that leaves no residue. Remove the grips and spray the slide and the frame and thats about it. I use an air compressor and air brush ans it does a fine job. I don't disasemble the trigger group or any other internals. Some slight overspray has never been a problem. For an all metal gun you just bake the gun in the oven after appling the finish for 30 min. and its done. Its an extremely durable and scratch resistant finish. Chemicals, sweat, moisture do not effect it. The finish goes on so smooth and satiny that all of the marking, even the very small roll marks and serial numbers are clearly visible.

Look at these grips by Dennis I installed on my CZ82, which I also Duracoated matte black. His products are first rate and relatively inexpensive for such high quality.
