How do you guys take such good pics? I'm always embarrassed to put mine up. Mailed this to Mahovsky's for hard chrome on 6/27, came back today.

Pirate,
Great pics and great job! I have never duracoated a gun so I have a couple of questions: If you are using a gun with a plastic frame i.e. XD what do you do differently - how to you get it to apply as opposed to heating it in the oven with a metal frame? Do you do more take down / disassembly with plastic frame guns? You do great work, how hard is it? How do you get the duracoat to apply evenly? How did you choose the color of paint? Do you do cammo work? Chapie+ Quote:

Duracoat is relatively simple to apply. If you have an air compressor and air brush you are ready to go. I use an inexpensive air brush from Harbour Freight Tools that cost around $15. The prep is the key. You have to prepare the substrate you are coating/finishing. This means it needs to be very very clean and free from all dust, oils, solvents are anything that will prevent a good bond. I have linked you to the Duracoat web site that has FAQ page Welcome to Lauer Custom Weaponry The key is to apply the finish in several thin coats allowing it to dry for a couple min. between coats. I can do the one color finish on a pistol in about 15-20 minutes. I have a small table and built a rack and use metal coat hanger wire to hang the frame and slide onto to apply the finish. When I first attempted the process I practiced on some cardboard to get the hang of spraying the finish and adjusting the air brush nozzle. Its not very difficult really but you just have to go slow and take your time. Plastic frame guns of course cannot be baked to dry. The finish will be dry to the touch in around 1 hour and will be completely cured within 2 weeks. After one hour you can just store the gun in your safe or cabinet and wait the 2 weeks before you shot it. You can handle it but it will not be fully cured and ready to use yet. I have not tried a camo finish yet, that requires the stencils and you have to buy the ones you need. They have many many color options to pick from. Hope this helps. |
