I would guess that the morning dew and or humidity caused that. A few years back I took a little keltec camping with me and when I woke up the next morning it had completly rusted over.

Try some 0000 steel wool if simply rubbing it with CLP or other gun cleaner/oil does not do the trick.
Remember to oil the crud out of that baby next time you drag it out to the woods!

Some guys i know from the Cincinnati PD have talked about the same issue. If they carry their M&P for a few days without wiping it down it gets a few spots of rust on it. The main place they say they find it is near the rear sight...not under but almost.
As long as you keep it wiped down and a light coat of gun shield or something you will be ok.

If it's just surface rust you can sometimes just knock it of by wiping it with an oily cloth like one of those remington gun oil pads. This happened to a shotgun I left in my trunk over night on a hot summer day.
If it has ruined the finish then you will have to go to more drastic measures to fix it. I left my keltec in my car for a week while I was gone to Minnesota and when I came back all the external steel was rusted beyond repair ><. |

My friend who just bought a M&P 9MM Compact told me S&W was replacing slides and parts due to rust problems. You can find several threads at mp-pistol.com on rusting.

I've had good luck with steel wool.

Use #0000 steel wool and Break Free. Go slowly and you will get it off.
Then, use Blue Armadillo or another quality rust preventative. - Brickboy240

wool and oil... Dont get upset, its steel and steel rusts. Everyone takes for granite the durable finishes that are available today.
