Talking A rock and a.....well, you know.

Hey Guys,
I have a bit of a problem. I love the look and feel of 1911. It has to be my favorite style gun. Anyways, when I get home I want to buy myself a "welcome back gift". I was thinking of either getting a Nighthawk or buying a Sig 220R Elite. The thing that is stopping me from getting the Nighthawk is that I already have a nice 1911. It's not even close to a Nighthawk but its really nice. My wife said she thinks I should have a different style gun then I already have. Which I am thinking about. Also, I am trying to become a cop when I get back. I already passed the exam and just have the P.T. test and Oral Board left. So this will be my duty carry/c.c. weapon. I know the Knighthawk is expensive to duty carry. Do you guys think its smart to spend that much on a duty/c.c. weapon? Any advice would help. I have a horrible 1911 itch so it makes my judgement cloudy. One thing is if I do spend that much on a gun I intend to use it. I don't expect it to be a safe/nightstand queen. Thanks Guys!

How much is your life worth to you? I wish we were able to carry something other than dept issue Beretta 92. As long as your chief approves the Nighthawk I would definately have a duty sized and a T3 for a back up.

I know nothing about Nighthawks but it sounds like they are great guns. But do want to have a beautiful gun like that as a duty weapon? There are plenty of other great, very reliable guns that can be used as a duty weapon that you mind getting dinged around.

And thank you for your service.

First you'll have to see if you are issued a duty weapon, or if you have to purchase your own. If you have to purchase your own, if you have a choice and what those choices are.

Las Vegas Metro lets you carry a gun of your choice. I know the have a wide selection of 1911's on the list. I just have to make sure Nighthawk is one of them.

71Novacaine: Just curious...but your bottom part says you have an XD45. Why not carry that as your duty weapon?

71Novacaine,

A Nighthawk is a ton of money to spend on a duty gun that's going to end up in evidence at some point or otherwise out. Get a Tactical XD .45 and an XD .45C for off duty. With the money you were going to put into a Nighthawk you can get a regular XD collection.

My first duty gun was a S&W 686 - that's a revolver for those wondering, we really did once carry revolvers made of steel and wood. #2 duty gun was a Sig 226 9mm when we discovered that 6 in the gun and 18 on the hip for a total of 24 rounds would never be enough rounds. So the Sig carried 15 with 2 more mags we carried 45 rounds at all times in the hopes of spraying and praying our way through the day (night). Then a Capt talked me into changing to Glock - big mistake for me - and I got to carry 60 rounds all the time with 3 x 20 round mags.

Then I observed what a 9mm does and what a .45ACP does and made the real change to an XD .45. That's the way to go. For the money you were going to dump on a Nighthawk or heavy TRP you can get an XD fully equipped. If you must go with a 1911 get a light one that won't be so heavy to carry all day long on an already heavy duty belt like the SA Lightweight Operator.

Thank you again for your service.

Aim for the sky,
Chapie+

Welcome back 71Novacaine........
Hey Buddy! Long time no talk. Been busy up here.

Well I like the idea of carrying something light all day so I will be thinking about that. When I get home I am going to have to mess around at the gun shop. Maybe if I got an XD Tactical I could send it off and have some work done on it. Or maybe get that Sig and get some mild trigger work done. We will see. You guys will find out as soon as I do.
