I had and carried a Kimber 1911 for about 18 months. The external extractor broke, and I had a horrible time with their customer service. They were rude and accused me of making mods to me gun when they hadn't even seen it. It was one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. The external extractor has been an issue for Kimber; not for some others that have used it, but Kimber never got it right.

With that said, I really enjoyed my Kimber, and it shot well right out of the box. Until the external extractor went out, I never had a problem. If you get a Kimber, just avoid any model with an external extractor.

And IMO if all else is equal between a SA and a Kimber just remember that SA has great customer service.

NDB_MN Welcome to XD Talk!

Here's a couple of thoughts on your question.

#1 get a West German used Sig P6 / 225 for less than $300 for your wife. Here is a link about that: Anyone get their P6/P225 yet?

#2 get yourself a STI Spartan 1911 in .45 ACP for less than $600.
STI Spartan

You'll get both guns, you'll both be happy, and you'll be under budget. I would stay away from Kimber, I hear their quality has gone down and they are having lots of problems with their external extractors.

Sig P229 would be my choice.

Admittedly, she likes my P225 SIG better, but she has shot the 5" 1911 many times and did not complain.

My Daughter handles my Kimber or Springfield better and is more accurate with it than even the wife's CZ75 9mm. I really like the 229 in fact I just picked one up in .40 S&W yesterday and am quite impressed. But I can see where the grip might be a little large for a woman.

I would pick between the M&P 9 Compact and the 229. I have a 229 in 357 Sig and an M&P 9 Compact, they are both amazing, I'm really accurate with either gun, which says a lot to them as I'm generally average-at-best.
