Rifle Suggestion?

Can someone suggest a rifle that would be fun to shoot that I could find for less than an AK? (Something comparable to the AK?) What does a SKS go for on average? I know nothing about rifles so treat me like a child!

Throw up a price and we can help a LOT more. But remember you will spend more on ammo than you will on the gun.

If you want something that is fun to shoot, think about an unusual 22.
If you want the thrill of recoil think about a shotgun.
If you don't have 300yards to go shooting in or plan to hunt with it a medium power rifle like an AK isn't needed.

There are many different kinds of SKS rifles out there and the most common would probably be a Chinese or a Yugoslavian. A decent one should go for about $200 to $300 depending on condition. The major set back these days is the cost of ammo. 7.62x39 made by Wolf used to be about $75 per 1,000 rounds maybe 5 years ago. Now it's over 3 times that price!
I also say start out with a .22 rifle and move up as your interest developes. It's a great big gun world out there! Good luck, shoot safely

I'd go with a 22 also, They're really fun to shoot, especially when you consider the cost of ammo nowadays. I can take my plinker 10/22 with 4 25 round mags to the range, stop by Wal-mart and pick up a box of 550 22 rounds and spend a good part of the day shooting. The same amout of money spent on any other caliber gun in ammo will last at best an hour if I take my time.

Skip on the SKS. Good guns but for the same amount, get a Saiga in the caliber of your choice. They run around $260 depending on caliber choice.

Plus, you always have the option of converting it to a true AK pretty cheap down the road. They come in .223, 7.62x39, .308, .410, 20g, and 12g (if you can find one and it will cost you about $500 right now!).
