Home Defense Gun (7rd / 20 GA)
I'm thinking about one of these for a home defense gun. Something my wife would be comfortable shooting. My house close to (and between) a couple others and a big picture window on the front so I'm kinda limited to birdshot. This looks like it would be a fun little gun.
It's $390 at BudsGuns (plus $30 shipping - there are no "Remington Premier" Dealers up here in Alaska according to the Rem website). Anyone have any info/comments? Remington Model 870™ Express® Express® 7-Shot 20-GA Premier Dealer Exclusive ![]()

I think your money may be better spent on a 12 ga with light recoil rounds. However, one of the gun experts, I forget which one said a good 20 ga was perfect for home defense. I would not shoot birdshot for Home Defense. Lot of good information on the net about HD & shotguns. Do a search on Box o truth.

It is my understanding that a 20 is a fine HD weapon, and if you think the wife can handle it better than a 12 .... Go for it!!
I have to agree with Broadside, Birdshot is for birds! Based on you description #4 Buckshot or if you can find it ... #1 Buckshot is the way to go. #00 will work, but will have a greater tendency to over-penetrate. Myself, I keep mine loaded with #1 ... It's a few extra pellets, doesn't really give up much on penetration, and actually provides more surface area thump upon impact. There is only one problem with #1 ... It's hard to find. You'd probably have to order it. That's the only way I've obtained it for my 12

You will probably only be able to find #4 buckshot for it anyhow.

I would also agree, go with buckshot. Birdshot is for birds, and while at close range it will do damage, it might end up just pissing the intruder off more if he's a big guy(plus you being in Alaska it might be a big animal).

Sorry, to answer your question the shotgun would be a good choice. 20ga is enough and if she can handle it better than a 12ga then do it.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 20 ga for HD...I say go for it! I know I wouldn't want to be on the business end of that shotgun

thanks
OK thanks for the info. I was thinking bird just because to 2 most likely places for them to get in would be close to the big picture window or the a sliding glass door. I don't want to hit the other houses. I'm mainly sticking with 20 ga because my wife is recoil sensitive and I've read other reviews (Clint Smith in one of last months gun mags) saying 20 ga is sufficient for home defense.
I'll research some more on box o truth. Thanks for the info!

If you're getting the Knoxx stock (pictured with the gun you posted earlier), it will reduce recoil even more. A 12ga with a Knoxx SpecOps kicks less than a 20ga (IMNSHO) without.
20ga + Knoxx = pussycat |
