S&W Model 637 PowerPort

Looks like a nice 38 revolver. Anyone know anything about it? Price?

Nice gun indeed. Dont know much about it, but have you seen the 586 L comp? 7 shot 357 ported! I also like the 629 carry comp.

No, haven't seen them. But are they in a J frame or an L frame?

I flinch more from concussive muzzle blast than physical recoil, so I imagine that would be a most unpleasant gun to shoot...

I wouldn't carry it. Those revolvers are meant for up close and personal. I've yet to experience it, but I can't imagine the hot gases coming out of that port towards your face and neck would be pleasant if you ever had to use it defensively.

I think it is a J-frame with an overmolded grip...

Think he was talking about the 586, which is indeed an L-frame

S&W Model 637 PowerPort

I'm responding to an older thread, because I didn't see this information there concerning the S&W Model 637 PowerPort. It is a relatively new issue from S&W and this version takes some of the discomfort out of shooting a .38 Special snubnose - altho the one I purchased has a 2 3/8" barrel, slightly longer than the normal S&W snubnose. The "PowerPort" is an opening just ahead of the front sight that substantially reduces recoil. For the gases from this port to cause a problem when the gun is fired, the shooter would have to have the gun almost under his/her chin. The front sight is drift adjustable. The grip is rubber with finger grooves - much more sensible than the shorter wood grips. The trigger and hammer can be locked with a "key" that fits into a small opening on the left side, an added safety feature for homes with young "explorers." The price at this weekend's gun show was $520 new. Since I had purchased before from this dealer, an additional discount was in order.
