good hog hunting caliber
Have you ever noticed while watching YouTube vid's that you start with one topic and somehow you end up watching vid's on something totally different? Somehow I ended up watching about 30 vids on varmint and hog hunting. Some of the hogs being taken looked to be in excess of 200 pounds. So what is a good caliber for hunting wild pigs? I saw one vid where they said it was .308 and it did do the job.
Do people ever eat the hogs that they take?

I've used .308, 30-30, 30-06, 12ga slug and the last pig was taken with a xd40 with 2 shots. Was a humane kill but I don't recommend using a 40. This instance happened to be 5-10 yard shots and the .40 was all I had with me at the time.
A friend of mine uses a .270 only and has a lot of success. |

I prefer 30-30 or larger rifle caliber, 12 gauge slugs, 44 mag and up preferred for pistols when hunting over dogs at close range. Like any game, shot placement is key. Put em down quick!
Wild hog or meat hog, they're gonna taste gamey. Like cookieXD40 suggests, you gotta know how to cook em. I prefer Publix or Winn Dixie but there's just something about eating what you've harvested that makes them taste better.

So is there a season for hogs or are they so prevalent and destructive that it's a "see them, kill them" deal?

Been using a S&W 29 .44mag for years. Works well.

I would prefer to use my Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 with 350 grain bullets i cast myself. But, when i go hunting for several species of non game - coyote, armadillo, and hog, I like to use my Stag M4, in 5.66 with 55grn. FMJ.
That's what i used to kill this 170 lb. hog last spring. Shot him off-hand from about 100 yds. into the shoulder. Walked up to him & gave him a finishing shot to the head with my 1911. My friend that was with me killed a 150 pounder with a Mini-14 using the same round, about 5 minutes eariler.

I believe in Texas right now it is 24/7 no limit and no gun restriction. I think you can shine'em if you want. Just whack'em.

Yep. They're not a game animal. Like stepping on cockroaches, use what you've got.

A perfect hog hunting gun is the Mosin Nagant, it's a cheap gun, cheap ammo, stout round. Hogs are DRT when they meet up with the Mosin. |
