Unless someone is prepared to provide the news story about this, the ambulance report, the police report, names of those involved and sworn testimony by the alleged shooter, this incident is pure fabrication.
The fact that so many are willing to accept these photos as proof, just goes to show how gullible folks really are.

The barrel was probably fluted which is why it peeled so regularly. It peeled along the fluting lines which would be areas of relative weakness.
Edit... The link above tells you where it happened, when and who took the PIX. "The rifle was a garden-variety Savage chambered in .30-06 Springfield. The event occurred on 30 September 2006 at a gun club range in Vancouver, Washington. Photos by Karl Leffler." Edit #2 A guy named Yuri Orloff was an eyewitness. Here is his comment... "I was in the lane to the left of this guy when it happened and know the guy who took those pictures. It was up at Clark Rifles in Brush Prairie, WA the last Saturday in September of this year. There was a big bang when the barrel split. I looked over and around the baffel and got the shock of my life. The guy was pretty upset, to say the least. To my knowledge, the barrel wasn't fluted. The rifle was a Savage, but I forget the caliber. I know I sure to double check my rifles everytime now!" Edit #3 Clark Rifles Inc. Check out the PIX of the Lower Range at Clarks including the trees to the far right and the washroom building. I think you will find the range consistent with the photos of the peeled barrel down to the yellow line in front of the shooting station and the tree on the right. The building panels are also consistent. Maybe folks aren't so fricken gullible after all.

A much more intriguing incident as the shooter claims the first shot was normal and the second shot blew the barrel ( not likely ).
The first one though is still a fake.
