I think it is real and I think it happened. Plug the barrel and what do you expect to happen? The overpressurization happens in a minute fraction of a second and the barrel is toast or it will pop the breech... something has to give. I say no BS on this one.

This is staged. The way a rifle barrel is constructed would preclude it peeling like a banana. That is a cartoon myth.
Also interesting how there is no reference to where or when this actually occured. Typical Internet creative story. Can't be verified, but looks believeable enough folks are willing to take it at face value.

It wasn't that episode, but they used the exact picture as in that link when they tested it. Only "insert name of old school barrels that I can't recall the name of that should not be fired any more because of their construction" would produce anything like that on the show.

The fact that mythbusters put a squib in and failed to "peel" the barrel by no means proves that a barrel won't peel. It depends on the barrel, the nature of the obstruction, the type of ammo, the powder etc. What you see in these PIX is definitely real and has happened to others. It happens to handguns as well maybe without the barrel peeling but certainly with explosion of the chamber and receiver. We have had threads on this system showing exploded Glocks and other guns.
Bottom line DO NOT OBSTRUCT the barrel in any way or bad things might happen.

Something makes me think that if a barrel were to fail under extreme pressure, it wouldn't fail so uniformily, peeling back like that. My dad's friend fired a 50 cal muzzel loader and forgot to take the loading rod out of the barrel and it was completely fine other than a walloping amount of recoil.
Also on one of the shows on the outdoor channel one or two wednesday's ago, there was a test that took a bennili m4 shotgun, and put a 20ga shell in a 12 ga gun first, followed by a 12 ga shell. When fired, both rounds detonated inside the barrel , with no damage done to the gun at all. I don't see how a small lazer that is not forced into the end of the barrel would be enough to make an airtight seal that would allow enough pressure to build up to cause a failure like that.
