I'm going to Sportsmans today to buy either the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. I spent a half hour with both yesterday at lunch.
One thing I realized is you can't get into the magazine tube of the Mossberg to clean it. At least I couldn't see how it is done while the Remington had full access. The Mossberg fit me a little better (shorter stock I think) because it rose to sight aquisition much easier for me. I would raise it and be looking right down the barrel length and bead spot on. I felt like I had to lower the muzzle after raising the 870. In an "adjustment" sort of way. But certainly the 870 action was smoother, maybe a shorter stroke too. It looked much more expensive however superficial that is. It seemed better built in a quieter kind of way. The 500 was clanky but I sure like how much easier the 500 is to load and clear a stuck shell if needed. I recall the 500 had 2 ejector claws while the 870 had 1 I believe. I like the looks of the tac forend of the 500 more but that too is superficial. Obviously the bolt release is better located on the 500 but the safety on the 870 was my preference. I guess that's the issue with these two shotguns, you go back and forth and in the end, either is a fine choice for HD. Each has it's advantage and disadvantage. I'm not swayed too much on the aluminum versus steel receiver. BTW, both are $299 even if the 870 appears be more more expensive in looks. I am leaning toward the 870 right now. I'll own either one within 2 hours

I bought the Remington 870 Express Synthetic witn 2 shot extension.
18" barrel, 7+1 $299 It's a sweet HD shotgun for $300 plus I had a $200 gift certificate from my birthday. Now I need to start accesorizing it! So I go that 870, a soft case (cheap Allen), two boxes of HD buckshot shells and a big box of 8 shot trap loads for practice for $165 out of pocket, out the door . . . I couldn't be happier

Reeek- I would love to hear a range report on that stock/forend when you get it!
I was thinking about something like this: ![]() ...and then put the side mounting shell holder on it, but it seems like that one you ordered might help bring the center of gravity back a little bit, which would be nicer...

That's a good looking rig there too. Are those ATi components?

That setup is not mine, just a pic of the stock/forend that I am thinking about getting. I have the 870 with wood furniture and a 28" barrel at the moment, but I am ordering a 20" police barrel (rifle sights) and new furniture to turn it into more of a HD/SHTF shotgun.

WHY? Because when you start firing 00 Buckshot you WILL kill some of them. 00 Buck blows through / penetrates apartment and house walls like a knife through butter. Think beyond your own needs and consider your backstop. Your backstop is the apartments around you and the occupants therein. That may not sound "COOL" or "Rambo" or even "Tactical" but it is responsible and you will be held very responsible for everyone you kill when the dust settles. Chapie+ |
