Marlin 1894C .357 mag

Best load for varmits?

Wanting to replace the rear sight, suggestions? (looking for something quick)

When you take the rear sight out, who sells a plug to put it in its place, can't find one on Brownells and I know there is one there somewhere, lol.

Turned into my favorite rifle, now saving for the Cowboy version, you just have to love lever action rifles.

What are you replacing the rear sight with? An adjustable tang peep sight?

Be careful there....lever actions are like Mausers and 1911s. Before you know it...you'll have a whole safe full of those things!

I have three Marlin lever actions: a 1894 18" carbine in 357 (like yours), a 1984S 20" in 44 magnum (with a beautiful burled fancy walnut stock) and an early 70s 336 short magazine version in 30-30. Dad has an 1895SS in the mighty 45-70. Again...ALL are fantastic shooters. I am now on the hunt for a nice, early marlin 39 in 22lr for my 10 year old daughter, since she discovered that the Marlin 357/38 does not kick and has decided to shoot me out of my supply of cheap 38s!

I also have two Savage 99s (a 243 and 300 Savage) as well as two Wincehster 94s in 30-30. Yes...you could say i love lever actions!

I use the stock sights on all of my leverguns except the 243 Savage 99 that wears a 3x9x40 scope. I really like Marlin's stock sights, but Dad has a Lyman receiver mounted peep sight on his 45-70 Marlin and I have to admit, its pretty damn fast to acquire. This is Dad's wild pig gun, so fast shots in the brush are a must.

I have noticed that almost all Marlin lever guns have drilled and tapped holes on the side of the receiver for this Lyman sight. The sight he has is the 66LA and Lyman has been making these for many years and they're not cheap but very good sights.

Here is the one he has: Lyman Product's Sights

Now, we don't own any of the tang mounted peep sights, but I love the way they look. I have heard that they are not as robust or as precise as the reciver mounted peep sights, but I don't know for sure. I'd love to play around with one...especially if I do get a Marlin 39 22 for my daughter. Tang mounted peep sights are usually more expensive than receiver mounted sights.

Check out the Lyman sights...they're high qualty and classics.

Varmint loads? Depends on what kinds of varmints you're after. I have shot raccoons and feral cats with plain old 125gr jhp 38s and layed them flat. No hot +Ps necessary. I have also busted them with lead cowboy loads. For bigger varmints, you could go with some of the hotter 125gr 357s or maybe the Hornady LeverRevolution 357 ammo, but for smaller critters, its just not needed. Besides, 357 ammo is getting so pricey...why waste it on varmints? Just about any 38spl that groups well, will kill small varmints with ease.

Have fun...and don't be surprised if you are not looking for a 44 or 30-30 Marlin in a short while. Those things just happen! LOL

I have an original Lyman #2 tang mounted peep on one of my 1894s. I like it, but it gets in the way a little. If I was outfitting a new gun, I would go with Brickboy's suggestion.

Yeah, someday, I am going to HAVE to take the time and drag them all out of the safe for photos. The 44 mag Marlin has such pretty wood and how often to you get to see a Winchester Canadian Centennial Commemorative Mod.94 30-30 in immacluate shape?

I'll get arond to it someday...but those things take time.

962-000-034
080-000-193
579-087-100
or, if you need to fill screw holes:
080-716-648 for 6-48 thread
080-716-840 for 8-40 thread
