Slow night. Me and why a FAL
I have spoken before about why I got a FAL and tonight I stumbled across some pics. This is THE quintessential pic of what I saw on the news every night when the Belfast conflicts were going on. Brit soldiers and this long sleek mysterious rifle that I had never seen before. I didn't even know it's name until around 1990 I guess ( pre-computer days for me ). I suppose other folks have these same kinds of feelings with regards to cars or boats and stuff, for me it was the FAL. I like a lot of other guns, cars and junk for various reasons. I like the Sigs for their legendary reliability, I like the 1911 for it's history but the FAL for what ever reason is a guttural, visceral need for my soul.
If you have similar sappy stories please post um. ![]()

I know what you mean. When I hold and shoot my FAL, it feels to me what a real battle rifle should be. It's big, heavy and packs a punch. When I was growing up M16s and HK91s were coming on line and the AKs had been around awhile. They were interesting because they where latest and greatest but seeing the FAL in action made it look like the rifle of a warrior. My DPMS-.308 is lighter, shorter, better trigger and can shoot inside of my FAL but I trust the FAL to be around long after the DPMS is worn out.

Nice photo. Those Brit Paras with their beret, DPM camo and FAL are the classic image of soldier.
I have a STG58, love the gun. I hope some day I will have the courage to drop a couple Gs on one of this: SA58 FAL G1 FAL Collectors Edition 7.62mm Rifle-D S Arms |

The FAL is designed like a fighter jet, right to the very limits of the design. Ergo's are great and it is extremely reliable, accuracy goes from so-so to phenominal, a much better platform than the M14. I fired my first one while in the field in Belgium, but for some reason I never fell in love with the gun. I always loved the G3 myself but the costs of that weapon system has always boggled me. I keep looking to find a H&K made weapon for a reasonable cost but I'm afraid those days are long past.

FAL the greatest battle rifle of them all. The Beautiful part of the FAL is cleaning is optional and spare parts? what spare parts, you don't need spare parts with an FAL.

Well I don't know what you call that last thing but it ain't a FAL no more.
You DO need SOME spare parts, eventually the locking shoulder has to be replaced every once in a blue moon as the FAL has headspace problems like most medium rifles, but after I got mine broke in I had zero probs ( FTF when new, went away quickly. )

I shot an FAL for the first time last weekend. Man that thing is an accurate fun shooting gun. I have been looking at building one for over a year now, but have just kept building ak's. Maybe it is time to switch for a bit.
