sks recomendations

I am relatively new to guns, and am looking to get my first rifle. I have been doing some reading about SKS rifles. I know there are many different makes of SKS and I was wondering if anyone here has an SKS and can make any recommendations/things to look/look out for.

This will be mostly a range gun (since I don’t hunt…so I guess it will be completely a range gun)

I am a big fan of Russians. Look for rearsenal marks, force matched parts. It really depends on your budget, but overall sks prices are not that terrible. They use to be a lot cheaper.

Ive checked with the local gun shops and the prices around here seem to be $200-$240 one of the shops has a norincos for $190.

the only thing I have read that seems to something to avoid is the ones with detachable magazines...can anyone shed light on what the problem is (as in why they seem to have FTF's)

YES , keep all your SKS's STOCK as they come . SOme people get kinda crazy and start to modify their SKS's and adding detachable mags to them and this causes FTF's and FTE's . If you keep them stock they will be as relaible as a Honda .

my norinco came with a detachable mag, i made the shop give me the orginal mag that came with it. i took it home and loaded up the 30 rounds and it wouldnt cycle the rounds properly.

my friend has a norinco with a detacable 30 round tapco and his works fine. im not a huge fan of the detachable mags if you want something like that go with an AK.

i would try to pick up a norinco if i where you because they cant be imported anymore. and at 190 if its in good shape thats a pretty good deal i think they normally run 250+

Most Norinco's have chrome-lined barrels . Most Yuogs dont. But I prefer the Yugos better because they are milled and not stamped. They are made to last . They , however do not have chromed barrels but their steel is a lot beefirer because of this . Also , Yugos are usually cheaper in price.

I think $300 is a little high for an SKS. I sold my Chinese SKS for $135 in order to finance my XD. The person I sold it to has several & said that he would be selling it in the $150 range.

If you have a stamped Chinese SKS, you have a good collectors item-98% of all Norincos are milled receiver guns, the only difference after that is pinned barrel or treaded, stamped trigger guard or milled....and the steel of the Yugos has no bearing on chrome lining...chrome lining was not 'economical' for them since they have to import the chromium-unlike Romania, Russia, Germany, China, and I think Albania....

Get the Norinco, less headaches with the gas system-lots of factory spare parts everywhere...
