The SKS is utterly reliable, simple and reasonably accurate. Well...as accurate as any 30-30 lever gun and you will use the SKS at "lever gun" distances....right?

Too bad you all missed out on the early 90s heydays when a minty Russkie SKS went for a paltry 75 bucks. A case of the best Chinese made Norinco ammo was another 75 bucks. The low prices on SKSs for many years is how I wound up with my four (1952 Russian, 1958 Romanian, 1959 Yugo and 1964 Chinese Military).

Yes...find the nicest SKS you can and buy it. You'll wonder how you went so long without one.

i got my norinco for around $100 when i was a lil kid with paper route money, an ATI folding stock, a fiberglass red stock "aka jungle stock", orginal wood stock, bayonet, bi pod, sling, cleaning kit, sight tool etc, didnt set me back much more.

poster look for something other than the yugos, they arent chrome lined barrels. I think if you cruise some pawn shops or gun shows you can get an equally clean/nice condition as the yugos out at the big shops, but get the nice chrome lined barrel.

Bought an Chinese SKS before the import ban. It was the most worthless gun I've ever owned. From a bench it shot 6" right at 25yd with the front sight set all the way right. Three gunsmiths later, none of them could fix it. Unloaded it at a gun show.

My take on firearms. A good gun will last you a lifetime. A crappy gun will be a crappy gun for a lifetime. Buy quality once. Save your $$$ and buy something better.

I bought my SKS many many moons ago. Literally bought it out of a barrel of em and paid $50.00 for it. Still have it today and it still shoots great. Also bought a Gustaf Mauser in 6.5X55 out of another barrel. Paid $100.00 for it with all matching numbers and in about 90% condition. man I miss the good old days.

Willikers, what I wouldn't do for a $50 SKS.

Are you telling the truth/honest opinion or just trying to help me out?

It is the truth.

If you have your heart set on one, fine. But I'd sure get some sort of money back guarantee in case it doesn't shoot.

Once bitten, twice shy.

It took six whole pages for anyone to actually have something negative to say about the idea of getting a rifle.

The particular one I was referring to in the original post was over-priced for an old Yugo junker.

I think I'm approaching this SKS thing with more sobriety now.

Thanks for your input.
