My first rifle was a Marlin model 60. I still shoot it every summer. Very accurate, easy to take apart and clean, CHEAP.

For the money, you cannot beat a Marlin 60. Love the tub feed, accurate as hell, dependable, easy to strip, cheap (price), etc..

I saved mine from a pawn shop for $75 and threw on a $35 Bushnell, a new buffer, a good cleaning, and it'll DESTROY beer cans at 100 yrds.

Well I can only comment on what I have and that is a Savage Mark II and I can tell you that it has been very reliable and a tackdriver. Sure there is better .22 rifles out there but for the price you can't beat it. I can repeatedly hit a coke can at 160 yards no problem.

I have 2 Ruger 10/22s and i love them.. never had a problem out of either of them.

Didnt go to crazy on the mods cause i wanted one for squirrel hunting and varmints.
Its super light!

Here is my first one.. acutally my dad got it for me one christmas.. 8 years ago i think.. has around 150k rounds through it, My neighbors love me soo much. I made my own sling and traded one of my buddys a box of .22 bullets for the Tasco Reddot.

Dont pay any attn to the AR..

Always loved the 10/22s.. i want another one.

22 rifle

Did about 3 months of research and ended up getting a CZ453 Varmint.
Here's a couple of pics:

One of the best rifles I've purchased and shot. Great 22 rifle!

+1 on the CZ, bought my son a CZ 22 LR 452 Lux for his 12th birthday a year and a half ago. It's a tack driver, I put see through rings on it for him with a 4x fixed power scope. They are awesome firearms.

Here is my son's target at 100 yards 10 rnds. Sniff Sniff I'm pretty proud...

A plain ol' Marlin 60 probably will
fill your needs.

Hey guys,

I appreciate all the speedy input. There's a lot of good info here, and i will add this thread to my subscriptions for future reference.

Last night on my way home, I decided to just pop into Gander Mountain. They had a 10/22 Compact - the first one I had seen in person, ever. I looked around a little more, but eventually decided to bite the bullet on the Compact. I got the only boxed one they had. Their price matched that which my favorite small local shop quoted me, (though they had no clue when the gun would arrive = weeks/months), as well as prices I've seen on Gun Broker.

So ends the quest for now... But I see other .22s in my future. There was a lot mentioned here about the Marlin 60. Gander had two of these used for $99 - one had a smooth stock, and the other a checkered stock. both guns looked pretty clean.

Brickboy, i did come across a Remmy 514 (I think it was a 514) 'boys rifle.' This was a single shot bolt gun, and looked pretty worn. $149 was the price on that one. I'll keep an eye open for more of those Remingtons that you mentioned.

CZs and Savages will most likely be considered in the future, too. So many .22s, so little $$$

For the near future, I'm going to try to keep the .22 bug going by trying to find a replacement stock for an old Stevens 66 bolt action I have. This gun belonged to my Grandpa, and the stock is split down the middle from the magazine tube exit to the trigger guard. It'll be fun to get this one up and running after being out of commision for so many years.

Thanks again for all the input!

-Marc
