Need to buy a hunting rifle....Your thoughts?

Hey Yall,

I need to get a good rifle put together for my Dad. I don't know if anyone read my previous posts but I just got back from Elk and Deer hunting on Santa Rosa Island.

My Remington 710 in .30-06 worked flawlessly for me, the .30-06 Browning my Dad borrowed was nothing but a headache. It was a semiauto, where the mag swung out, but was fixed, and a scope that had real poor eye relief. (Resulting in 2 experienced hunter scoping themselves)

So....if I may, I'd like to tell you what I'm looking for and see what you come up with, shopping with someone else's money. which is basically what I am doing.

Game being taken:
Deer (mule, white tail)
Elk (.03-06 worked well on Elk)
Boar/Wild Pig

Style:
Bolt action
*EDIT* wood stock, Pop's doesn't like synthetic

Caliber:
.30-06
.270
other???

Scope:
Power and brand?
I shoot a 4X9 power Bushnell, for Pops is more magnification better?

Thank you in advance for your opinions.

~Barbarossa

I have a .308 Remington 700 ADL with the synthetic stock and it works awesome. I think it fulfills all of your criteria pretty well. I don't hunt with it, but I'm sure it will take down what you listed. I just use it for target shooting with a Bushnell 3x9 and it's plenty accurate. It's a good one if you want a no frills, dependable, cost effective tool.

I would go with a Remington 700 (pick your flavor) and put a Nikon scope on it. They are great glass for the money and have good eye relief. I would go 3-9 or 2-7 for a big game rifle.

Hey guys!

I just look through the Remington 700 lineup they have online, and from what I see they all have swing out magazines? Am I missing something?

My reasoning is that you can carry a spare mag in your pocket rather then loose rounds.

Thanks!

*EDIT* was just reading Rifle help

Anymore on .308 vs. .30-06, I'm leaning towards .30-06 just to standardize ammo.

You get a ton of gun for well under $700 (street) in the CZ 550 American model.

It doesn't come scoped but you do get the rings.

Here is a sampling of the street price and there are several calibers available. CZ 550 American .30-06, 5rd Fixed Mag

Great guns.

CZ 550 American

But they are fixed mag . . . If .308 will work for you you can get the Varmint model 550 for a great price with detachable mag. CZ 550 Varmint

I love my Ruger M77 in .30-06. I took a 600 pound moose with it last fall.

Bolt action with a wood stock. Got it NIB for $564 two years ago.

maybe you should tell him how synthetic doesnt warp or expand in different climate or humidities...and holds a longer lasting better zero.

anywho...

browning makes great bolt actions. wood stock too. check out their A-bolts. i personally feel that since there is a .308 there is no need for an 30 06. but i believe they offer both.
