I have always been fond of the Remington 600 & 660. Really like the 673 guide rifle in 350 Rem mag with a good scope. They come in many different calibers.
6.5mm Rem Mag
308 Win
300 Rem SA Ultra Mag
350 Rem Mag

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in 30.06; I really like it.

I'm not sure how effective a .270 is for bigger game like elk, but I have a Remington model 700 in .270 bolt action with a leupold scope and it is by far my favorite deer hunting gun.

I have a Weatherby Mark V in 7mm-08 that shoots incredibly well. Very, very flat. Most of my hunting is at 100-225 yards and it's beautiful with my simple 9x Leupold scope, although I tried my dad's 12x and it was significantly nicer and easier to aim those long shots.

The smaller bullet gets FANTASTIC penetration (it's gone clean through every whitetail I've ever shot - nice clear blood trails).

... okay, not EVERY one.

Also, for some reason I've had incredible luck with not having to chase down deer. A lot of them just fall over and die. I don't know if the shock of the hit broke the back or what (note: very few of the shots were spinal shots), but it's nice to not have to chase a bloodtrail through the brush.

I don't know how this would do on larger game like elk. Never tried it. I'm tempted to say, however, that though a 150gr. bullet might do quite well with deer, Elk might be a different matter. Granted, there's a lot of oompf in the 7mm-08, but all I know is that when I shoot, the hole coming out of the deer isn't a lot bigger than the one going in. Not a whole lot of expansion, I guess.

Negatives on the gun: Range sighting is a b!tc#. The barrel is not very thick and heats up very quickly. After about three-four shots you have to wait about four-five minutes for the barrel to cool down b/c the accuracy goes completely to $h!t. Now this isn't a problem hunting when you're only going to pull the trigger once. But still, it seems to take forever for my rifle to cool down.
