I've got a bunch of Savages that are great. Of course, I think I've rebarreled them all into interesting calibers in my garage.

I love my Winchester M70 in 270. I have the Bushnell scope as well, but am looking to upgrade to a Nikon. The gun is deadly accurate, but a little on the heavy side with the wood stock. I'm preparing to replace the old stock with synthetic to lighten it up a little.

I'm surprised about the issue with the Browning BAR. I used to own a Belgium made BAR in 308 and absolutely loved it. I regret selling the thing. Was the problem with the rifle or mainly with the scope?

Mainly the 60's era scope, and the fact that it was a borrowed gun.

He never sighted it in, just borrowed it and went out hunting. There is no way to shoot that gun without scoping yourself, you have to be right up on it to see anything.

The guy we borrowed it from is a bit of a prankster, so...who knows, But Pop's needs a rifle he can call his own.

Also if you try to stealthily load a semi auto, (easing it forward) they jam. So you get a loud click, or a jam. At least this one did.

I am going to be putting my Winchester .300 up for sale in a day or two its a Super Shadow and a few month ago I had Magna-Port put a Magna break on it so the recoil is very manageable, and the gun is in great shape and well taken care of will be asking in the $400.00 dollar range.

I was recently shopping for a bolt gun. I inquired about Rem 700s, CZ, Weatherby, and Savage. My guy at the gun shop said it is hard to beat the deal that Savage offers with their Accutrigger models.

Savage Arms Centerfire Rifles

A Savage 111G or 114 may fit the bill for your Dad without breaking the bank.

As far as a scope goes, I can just recommend your Dad try some out somewhere like Cabela's, Gander, Sportsman's, Dick's, etc.

Many shooters consider the Accutrigger as the best trigger you can get on a reasonbly priced rifle, some say it's the best there is regardless.

No brainer......Browning A-Bolt (High grade wood) in 7MM Mag. Leupold is the only way to go. I've had this set-up for years and it is flawless, with many happy hunting trips.

Anyone know about the X bolt?

Was just reading my American Rifleman and they have a good write up.

anywho...

browning makes great bolt actions. wood stock too. check out their A-bolts. i personally feel that since there is a .308 there is no need for an 30 06. but i believe they offer both.
+1 I have had a Browning Abolt2 30-06 (wood) for 13 years. It has performed flawlessly and is very accurate. I also have a AR-10 which takes .308. I would stick with the 30-06 round since it is still extremely easy to find in many bullet weights (150-220) and types. The .308 is more limited and harder to find.

Personally I have been through some ammo (deer hunting) and I prefer the 168gr.ballistic tip the best.

good luck
