M1 Garand - pics of purchase

Is an M1 Garand a good rifle to add to my collection. Fired one the other day and was amazed with accuracy and how soft shooting it was.
Any thoughts on a potential purchase appreciated.

I would love to have one, but out of my budget range. and I don't have a purpose for it-- I can only buy guns I have a purpose for-- other than just for fun.

I know I would love to have one. Pretty accurate rifle, I always liked the way it looks and great part of american history.

Absolutely! A garand is on my short list as well. I let the one go that my Dad had and kick myself every time I think about it. Expect to pay about a grand for a garand.

I once told a senior gentleman at the range "They cost about a Garand!"

Cmp

The M1 Garand is an outstanding rifle. I trained with one at the Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Pendleton in the Marine Corps in 1966 and fell in love with it. I suggest that you look into the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) at CMP Home for information on getting a good price on an M1.

They are great rifles, and about the only semi auto rifle that fires a 'full power' round with great reliability, the only others are the SAFN 49, MAS 49/56, AG-42 (Hakim is the same gun) and the 1941 Johnson-with an honorable mention to the FG-42 and K/G43. Yes add one!

It makes for a very nice hunting rifle. A bit on the heavy side, but it will get the job done. Nothing like the "ching" sound when the en bloc clip is ejected!

Here's my CMP issued, post WWII rebuild, 1944 Winchester....

I went into Cabella's today, and there were 2 H&Rs on the long gun rack. I ogled them, I fondled them, I left and came back several times. They were asking $1200. If I'd had that much in my checking account, I can tell you with 100% certainty that RIGHT NOW I would be wiping the cosmoline off a new (to me) Garand, instead of browsing the XDTalk forums.

At least I got some elk jerky out of the deal... still...
