7.35 Carcano

I was at an auction tonight and picked up an old Carcano 7.35x51. Anybody know anything about these old rifles? I know that supposedly, Lee Harvey Oswald used one to assasinate JFK from the book depository. Other than that, I really don't know much about them.

Looks like ammo is hard to find for them and at a premium. I need to find some clips as well and maybe a bayonet at some time to accessorize it. I paid a whopping $60 for it so I don't think I got hurt. I'm in no hurry to shoot it so I can spend some time looking for ammo and such.

I tried to purchase it on my C&R FFL but the asshat dealer wouldn't accept it so I had to fill out the 4473 on it. His reply, "It's my opinion that a C&R FFL is not a real FFL." To which I replied, "Well, the BATF certainly considers it a real FFL!" I didn't get anywhere convincing him otherwise and filled out the form just to get out of there.

Typical Italian quality, not as good a shooter as the 6.5x52 (7.35 was under powered) but a good rifle none the less. And yes the 7.35 is hard to find cause no one wanted the rifles chambered in that round. Finland dumped thousands of them off to South American countries for that very reason.

Magic bullets are expensive!

I think this one is a reload-only proposition. This guy's site claims that they have the bullets for sale, but I'm not sure where you'd get the brass:

Graf and Sons doesn't carry that brass. So you may be screwed.

the Italians wanted to upgrade to the 7.35 because the 6.5 was a dog. due to ammo logistics, they decided to switch back to the 6.5, all during WWII.

look around, 7.35 is out there. I think Prvi Partisan still makes it, so look at Cheaper Than Dirt, Sportman's Guide, Ammoman, J&G and AIM. someone's bound to have it, then save your brass.

Just purchased 10 of the enbloc clips off gunbroker for $20. Not a bad deal really. I'll find some 6.5 brass and fireform it to fit the 7.35 and get some dies to load for it. That seems to be the most economical way I've found so far.

Actually, Oswald used the M38 Carcano carbine in 6.5mm.

I used to have an M38 Carcano and the ammo cost more than I paid for the rifle! It also gave me 50yd groups that looked mor like a shotgun pattern. Honestly, I don't know how Oswald did it! You'll never hear me dismiss all those "second shooter" theorists...I think they're onto something! LOL

It always amazed me that a country that brought us Beretta, Benelli, Perazzi and other fine gun makers would let their troops field such an inferior rifle. Add to it the fact that Italy's ally in WWII fielded 98 Mausers and theres no wonder why the Italian people hung Mussolini and his wife up by their necks in public as they did.

I believe that Norma or RWS makes ammo for the 7.5 Carcano. Old Western Scrounger in CA probably loads it was well but either way, you'll pay dearly to shoot the thing.

Have fun with it...but don't expect Mauser-like accuracy and you won't be disappointed.
