I *did* goof in my original post and write "the 500 Magnum was too much to be in any pistol" or something like that, when I meant to point out that it was in a revolver, not a pistol.

I said the 10mm is the ultimate *pistol* round, and mcb comes in talking about *revolvers*. That's like me starting a post about how awesome the new Camaro is, and him coming in and telling me the new Camaro sucks because the F-Super Duty can go through more mud.
Wrong in bold!

The term pistol has been around in one form or fashion since the 16th century

Noun - a small firearm designed to fit in the hand.

pistala (don't have the time with the umlats and such) meaning whistle. The term pistol was derived from that do to its resemblance to a whistle of the time.

I have always understood it to be that the term "pistol" refers to a semiautomatic handgun.

I also want to point out, because it's apparently not obvious, that of course I'm going a little over the edge with the praise. I just like the round, is all. I would actually pick a .45 ACP as the ideal defense round.

No worries I just recently learned the contrary.
I think the term pistol referring to semi automatics is so widely accepted it really doesn't matter.

I'm just having a good time.

This thread has gotten quite entertaining.
