Due to the purse draw issue, we didn't want the slide or hammer catching on anything, so mine shoots a Smith & Wesson Model 642.

I originally bought my wife a Smith 642 for many of the already stated reasons (small, light, simple, decent caliber). However, it still had too much recoil for her comfort and the short 1 7/8" barrel reduced accuracy.
She was rather intimidated by autos, but I convinced her to try a Bersa Thunder .380 (gold "pimp" model) instead. She was so pleased with the dead-on accuracy, minimal recoil, comfort and reliability (not to mention the fancier looks My only regret is that I shoulda got her a Thunder 9 as I bet she'd hardly known the difference and then we could share ammo...the .380 ammo is harder to find and more pricey.

I met my first rifle team coach in his hospital room. I had indicated interest in trying out for the rifle team. I was referred to his hospital room to talk with coach about my interest. From his hospital bed he shared wise and desperate words with me.
“Never. NEVER! Never get your wife something she can kill you with! I was going to get her a .38.” Then pointing as his abdomen, “Thank GOD I only got her a little .25!” He recovered from the gunshot wounds and was later released. He did not return to the University. No, I don’t know the rest of the story. But his words are worth reflecting upon. Recently I was going to be out of town so I asked my wife, who refuses to shoot anything, which gun I could leave her with for protection. She rejected the glock (it sits in the safe having been repaced - really upgraded - by an XD .45 Service that I brought with me). Next I showed her an old Colt Cobra .38 Special. She chose the Colt. Let her shoot a Glock 26 at the range; I bet she'll love it.

i would suggest looking at a sig P239 or P230, both are fine weapons and small in size.
also a beretta tomcat .25 is nice and the first round can be loaded through the top so she doesnt have to rack teh slide. http://www.ozarkguns.com/Beretta/Pis...nox_S_maxi.jpg

Yah, I wish we'd had one to try before I bought her the Bersa. Not that the Bersa was a bad choice, but I doubt she'd tell much recoil diff between that and the 26. Ah well...

When it came to my wife getting a gun for CCW I went nuts trying to keep her in the man stopper categories. What it boiled down to was gettting her a pistol she would carry. She's not a gun nut, and shooting doesn't really do much for her. She's a competent shot, but doesn't give a damn about the details.
We wound up with a Keltec p32. I was concerned about caliber, but she actually carries it, which beats a nice 9mm or 40 or 45 that gets left at home. What they can fire well on the range is trumped by what they are willing to carry all the time.

My wife didn't like the Glock 26 at all. Truth is, I don't like Glocks either. But I would have been happy if she had liked it. I wish I hadn't bought it. In my hands it just didn't work. I am glad that I have an XD Compact .45 - much better.
