If you want aftermaret mods galore go with the Remington 870. Me, I got the Benelli Supernova Tactical because it's kinda sexy for a 12ga pump and I got a great deal on it too. Paid the price of a 870 for it.

Shotguns are cheap and almost a dime a dozen under $400 for a really good one. Head to the local gunstore and check out a few of the ones recommended; Rem, Win, Moss are good choices.

I would go with a pump because you just cant beat the sound a pump makes when you are loading a round in the tube. That sound will make any crook really regret entering your house.

Pump and an 18" barrel (longest allowed by ATF without Form 1)
You "could" get anything you want (Rem 870 is perfect for this) and cut it down to 18" IF you never plan to use it other than for HD.

A shotgun can stay loaded for YEARS and never have a problem. Use quality oil to prevent long-term storage from rust and such.

I keep mine at full capacity, chamber empty though. That way I can use the sound of the first pump to let any perp know that I mean business.
