Need help IDing thisgum
I am in the process cleaning up the rifle for a friend. It was a Katrina gun. It didn't go underwater but the house did flood. The gun was on the top shelf of a closet. The gun is in great condition, Basicly all it needed was a really good cleaning.
All I know it is a 7mm. The person it belongs to said it might be a mousier<(I know spelling) The gun has been to a smith before. I can't tell you when nor can the owner of this gun The gun was left to him. I guessing this because of the rail that have been mounted. The gun was drilled and tapped in order to mount he rail and a scope. Here are some pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Any info would be great. Excuss my FEMA trailer my new house is still being built. Not sure if you have found what you are looking for yet, but it looks like a Mauser Kar 98 Action and barrel that has been restocked. Very poorly I might add. At first I thought it may be a German 1888 Commision Rifle but looking futher it looks like I said before to be a K98.
P.S. If it doesnt have any Nazi markings it could be a Pre-WW2 barrel and receiver. ![]()

7mm Mauser was used by the Spanish. I've got a 7mm Mauser I inherited from my Greatgrandfather but he sporterized it long before I was born so it looks nothing like it used to save for the stock sights.

What you have is an 1893 Spanish Mauser. Originally chambered in 7x57mm Mauser. This was the rifle that Teddy Roosevelt and his "Rough Riders" faced down at San Juan Hill in Cuba. Definately a better rifle than the Krags they were carrying. The 93 Mauser was used in other world conflicts and was a major influence on forcing the British to dump their Long Lees and Martini single shots for the much better MkIII SMLE Lee Enfield of WWI fame. A very historically important development in the history of all things Mauser.
A very good shooter in good shape and in its original caliber and a decent quality rifle. Many were converted to hotter calibers like 308 Winchester by some crazy importers. The 308 is WAY too hot for the old 93 Mauser action and these are considered by many to be unsafe to shoot. The 7x57mm Mauser is a great round. I have an 1895 Chilean Mauser that shoots this round and it is accurate and easy on the shoulder. My Uncle also has a Ruger No1 in 7x57mm and I have shot it as well. Its a great meduim range deer/pig round. Very popular as a deer round in Europe as well. You should not have any problems finding ammo for that rifle, as many makers still make 7x57 ammo. I like S&B's loading and its usually cheaper than the US big 3 makers or the other Euro factory ammo. Don't go loading it with Light Magnums or anything hot...again...the 1893 was not designed for stuff that hot but any commercial SAMMI spec 7x57mm round ought to be fine. Too bad somebody sporterized it...in original shape and oroginal caliber, a 93 Spanish Mauser is not all that easy to find these days. Enjoy that rifle...its a great round for deer. Definately a Model 1893 Spainsh Mauser...NOT German or Swedish. I have two Germans and three Swedes...so I should know! - Brickboy240

No..no pics, but the Spanish Mauser was closer to your guess of a 98. the one in the photo you posted is definately a German Gewher 98 of WWI fame. I have one that was made in the Danzig factory in 1915 and it is a dead wringer for that photo. The ammo crate is sits on looks to be some sort of post WWII Com-Bloc make. Probably Yugoslavian.
The 88 Commission Rifle was a totally different animal. The action was different and the barrel was stepped and had a shroud. They don't make very good sporters, either. The 88 Commission rifle was never built in the Oliveido factory...they were all built by Mauser of Oberndorf, Ludwig Loewe or DWM in Germany. What did it for me was the word "Olveido" on the receiver...a dead give-away that its Spanish ... so is the other stamping (farbrica de armas...thats Spanish). The 93 Spanish, 95 Chilean and many Mexican 7mm Mausers were sought after by sporterizers in the post WWII days. If you could not find a surplus 03 Springfield, German 98k or 1917 Enfield...many used these small ring Mauser actions for sporters. Most kept the 7x57mm caliber, as it was easy on the shoulder, accurate and killed whitetails easily. I have two sporterized Mausers (bought that way): a 1935 Standard Modell 98 rechambered in 22-250 and a Czech made G33-40 of WWII fame in its original 8x57 caliber. Both are great shooters. I don't know everyting about Mausers..but since I have several..I have educated myself on the many variations and God knows theres tons to learn about the world of Mauser rifles! - Brickboy240
