Question
Is there any way I can smooth out the bolt on my Savage without sending it in to a gunsmith? I've only had one bolt-action so I can make no comparison, but it seems like mine is particularly difficult to cycle. It's a long action .30-06 that gets cleaned after every range session, but I still can't get it to loosen up at all.
Suggestions?

Savage has that reputation. I have seen some that work like they are on ball bearing and others that seem like they were coated in sandpaper. Running the rifle seems to be one of the only ways you can do this on your own. Coating the bolt with an Anti-Seize compound like NECO Moly Slide can work but is very messy. I tried a Google but my Google-fu is weak today.

Thanks. It's got approx. 70 rounds through it right now, and I keep hoping it'll smooth out over time. We'll see.

I have a 308 Savage FP10 and the bolt does smooth out after a few hundred rounds.
