Finish Question
I just bought the magazine by Barrett firearms called tactical weapons combat rifles. In it is a article called custom camo finishes. It tells step by step how to camo your rifle. Cleaning and everything. But its talks about finishing with Krylon Camo color spray paint. What are your thoughts on this. I have never in my life thought of finishing any of my guns in spray paint. I know Barrett is a well know name, and they show a guy painting one of their .50 cals. Definitely not a cheap rifle. So I'm confused lol. Any thoughts??

I have done custom camo jobs on a couple of my rifles with krylon. These were wooden stock rifles but I did the receiver and barrel also. I just used a fine grit sandpaper to put a small amount of texture to the stock for paint to stick to..used some stencils I made and then used a clear sealer. Had no problems and I personally like the end result! About to do one of my shotguns the same way.

Lots of varmint hunters just use krylon. Same thing with the military snipers. Depends on if you look at your weapon like a work of art, or as a tool. All you're doing is breaking up the silhouette, doesn't have to look like clothing.

It wears, depending on how much, and how roughly you use it. Probably work for a year or two though. It can be badly worn, and as long as it breaks up the silhouette, it still works. Then you go buy a couple of new cans of Krylon for $1.29.

If you clean your weapon with any Gun Scrubber or Break Cleaner product, I would definitely not expect Krylon to last through a cleaning.
Using it on a barrel or anywhere that will get hot would probably not be a good idea. Krylon is not meant to take that kind of heat (why do you think they make special spray paint for your fireplace/bbq) I pay more and stick with the best, but that's because I want the best result and do camo jobs on the side for extra $$$ On the plus side of Krylon, if you mess up or don't like the way it looks, it would clean off easily.

Just depends on how many colors (or just one) and what pattern you want it in (traditional camo, digital camo, tiger stripe, etc...). You can PM me if you're serious, if not no biggie. I do have pics of my work floating all around the XD Forum.
