Home insurance

I have Allstate home insurance and they said that guns were only covered up to $1,000 on the normal policy and that if I wanted more coverage , I would have to get a separate policy just for guns and then go get all the guns appraised at a gun shop . I couldnt believe that $hit. Just think about this , you have like remington shot gun -$300 ,2 XD's -$800 and BAM theres $1100 right there . And to go have an appraisal done is gonna cost money , Lord knows how much . This just stinks . I have a great safe but still is nice to know you have insurance , you know what I mean ? I was just wondering what kind of insurance you guys have and what it covers.

Give NRA a shot. They insure firearms.

One thing about the companies such
as Allstate. They, along with the other
bigger companies, get your firearm info
in their data banks and it is in there
forever. It is also considered a 'feeler',
meaning that they are looking for persons
whom own firearms that are insured by
them.

I avoid them like the plague. My suggestion
would be to get insurance througj a separate
carrier, such as NRA.

By the way, your firearms will have to be
appraised reguardless who insures them.
This is a normal procedure. I'm not in the
insurance business, just been there and
done that.

Is it a good thing to have insurance on them? I never thought about it before.

I'm actually an insurance appraiser and depending on the state you will have more coverage. In any case, take a photo of all your guns and write down the serial #'s in a safe place.

Save any receipts you may have.Don't forget to take any scopes into consideration.

Actually,if you have anything out of the ordinary in value antiques,furniture,electronics,etc..make good records. It actually helps to have a good inventory and a video if a worse case situation like a fire would occur.

I don't know how other companies do it,but the fact you own firearms has nothing to do with hoy you are rated or anything else. Our adjusters will look on places like buds gun shop, etc to see what firearms are selling for when settling a claim.

I would shop different insurance companies. I had to take a "rider" policy out on my homeowners for mine. They did not require me to give them the serial numbers or photos or an appraisal. I chose the dollar amount I wanted to be insured, took down all of the serial numbers and took pictures and that is kept to myself. Should something happen, I am covered for full retail replacement. That is, after I fight with the adjuster to get back the money that they promised me in my policy that I paid to them. Man, isn't insurance like the mob? You pay them to protect you, but then something happens and they don't want to take care of you.

State Farm just asked "how much?" No serial numbers or other info. They will ask for that for an actual claim, but they have no reason to ask up front.

Buds? When making an insurance claim I would want my adjuster getting prices from Gander or Bass Pro.

Just kidding around. Thanks for the good info kart racer.

I also go thru statefarm, but I did give them a copy of photos and SN, as well as everything else I have insured thru them (keep a copy in my safe, my fathers safe (and I keep one of his), at the bank and with the agent). My family has been using this guy since he started (35 years or so), his son is running his office when he retires here soon. I update the policies/ photos ect every year on Jan 1st (to account for new christmas presents). My case is 16,000 insured on firearms, I believe, which is about 220-250 a year, I just pay for the year when I update.

When I get home from deployment I will update it again (I have been here since halloween and missed my Jan 1st goals) since I have bought 4 more guns, a xd, 2 308s (DPMS) and a 20 RRA AR predator, plus scopes for the 3 AR's. Dam I hate when I actually figure out how much I spent on some of my toys, but its life, and I would rather have them protected incase of the unthinkable ever happening.

Ed, and others here in the link to NRA Insurance. The nice thing is if a single firearm is not over $1500.00 all you have to do is give the total value of all your guns. If a gun is over 1500 you just have to fill out a form. They never ask for SNs.

I believe guns are like jewelry on most policies, as are antiques and other collectibles. There is a limit per loss depending on the ins. company. Our jewelry had to be appraised and listed individually. I'm not sure yet how they'll list the firearms. Last time I checked, the rate for firearms and jewelry was around $10-12 per $1000 of value, per year. So if you have $8000 worth of firearms, the yearly additional premium would be around $100
