I have dropped several whitetails, feral pigs and one Black Hawaiian sheep in their tracks with factory Fiocchi 240gr soft points out of my Marlin lever-gun. None of these critters took more than two steps after being hit.
Yes...the 240 grain 44 mags CAN kill just about anything in Texas at reasonable distances. It ought to do just as well out of a pistol...I just have not tried it with the 44mag Vaquero...yet! Dad dropped a nice Russian sow that went almost 300 pounds with his S&W 629 and Hornady 300gr XTPs. Impressive for factory ammo. At reasonable distances, the 240-300gr 44 mag loads are impressive killers, if you ask me. - Brickboy240

A .44mag at close range kills game as effectively as a .375 H&H, Large entrance wound and even larger exit. I've killed 3 deer with the .44 mag none have taken more than 1 step after the shot. It does a bang up job on Coyote's with the 180 grainer as well.

about 20 years ago I had a friend that managed a ranch down in south texas.the place was almost over run with feral hogs and they were tearing the place up.he use a ruger super blackhawk with factory win 240 gr jhp's and he said that it was wasn't putting them down and going into the brush after a wounded hog was not fun.
I loaded up a few boxes of my 240 gr swc gc cast bullets with a good dose of 2400 for him to try.it was about a month later and he said the cast bullets were big medicine on those hogs punched right through them.the jacketed bullets if they hit bone fragged and just didn't put them down. I know y'all like your jacketed bullets and have fun with them.I have been casting and reloading for over 30 years and I know what works for me in my guns.

I used to use XTP's but I too switched over to hard cast. I Was going to take a deer with them this past season but weather was bad and I ended up using the shotty.

for the 44 mag I use gas checks in the 265 and the 225 gr bullets.the keith 245 (250gr) bullet is a plain base.for alloy I use 9 lb wheel weight to 1 lb on linotype.bhn is right at 14 which is plenty.
I also shoot cast in my 45/70,375 and 44/40.I have taken several deer with the 280 gr lfn gc in the 375.boom/flop my 45/70 I use a 350 gr lfn gc bullet and it is a thumper.it will get the job done.I sent some down to a bud in fla for hogs.he loves them!!. pete 350 gr lfn gc 45/70 ![]()
