Question Pawn Shops

So I realize this may vary from state to state, but how are pawn shops allowed to buy and sell firearms? Do they have a license like gun shops? Do they perform background checks just like gun shops are required to go? How do they know the firearm they are purchasing isn't stolen or have a criminal history?

Thanks.

If you have a business address and $$ you can buy a FFL license. In TX there is a 21 day police wait at pawn shops on anything.

Yes - they have a Federal Firearms License just like a gun store.

Yes - they perform background checks.

Don't know how they check to see if it is stolen or not. Check with local PD? How do you know any used gun you purchase is not stolen or has a criminal history?

It is my understanding in Colorado that pawn shops can buy and sell used guns and do transfers. The shop itself can't be a distributor of a manufacturer like a gun shop. My ship to FFL is pawn shop.

when you have your background check ran its checks the serial number of the gun to see if its on a stolen list that the agency running the check has and it checks to see if you have a criminal history that would keep you from buying said gun.

I use my Pawn Shop for FFL transfers. They have unbelievably great service!

I shipped my AK to a pawn shop because it was less expensive than Gander Mtn. for the transfer and Gander won't accept AKs on an FFL transfer.

In Alabama they can be a retailer but I guess it varies state to state. When the gun is brought in to sell, they call the serial number in but if the gun was never reported stolen to the PD then it won't show up and they sell it anyways, unless of course the serial is sanded off then they won't accept.

None of the pawn shops around my town carry weapons any more. I don't know why.

My best outdoor activity is to go pawn
shop hunting for firearms. I just put the
word out on what I am looking for and
I get many calls to drop by for a looksee.

Plus, one of the local pawnbrokers, my
favorite, will order anything in the book
for me w/10% above his actual cost.

Pawnbrokers are aok!
