M44 Question

Searched through lots of threads, and couldn't find the answer,

I'm going to look at M44 Nagants tomorrow (big 5 79.99 ) and i've been reading up on what to look for. I know to check barrel/rifling/pitting/head space etc, but i've heard the check if the numbers match. What numbers and where should i be looking? Also, i've heard that headspace is not much of an issue IF the numbers match, its more of a problem if the numbers do not match. So what numbers do i look for and where do i look for them?

It the numbers on the receiver and bold handle match, you're good to go.

Honestly, for $80 don't worry about #'s unless you expect to find a "collector" When I bought my m44 I just said give me that one and I took it home and degreased it oiled it, and went out and shot it.

Matching numbers doesn't really matter. Look for a good condition chamber, outside appearance (no rust pits, holes, cracks, or anything bent) Look for cracks at the wrist of the stock.

Headspace should be checked ALWAYS, but I rarely do it myself and honestly, there aren't that many issues with the HS on Mosins. the only other thing you definitely need to pay attention to is the trigger and cocking piece. Cock the rifle and slam the cocking piece (big round knob) hard with your palm, also feel how light the trigger breaks. If the cocking piece 'falls' when you hit it-it just fired if loaded. If the trigger is very light and it 'fires' before you feel the 'take up'-pick another gun, cause it has trigger/bolt issues and can be very dangerous.

Other than that, even a 'crappy' looking bore may be a very good shooter-just check that there are no gaps in the rifling-counter bores are fine and do not hinder accuracy...

Bought one!

Went through it all.

Bolt assembly was nice and tight
Action was nice and smooth, no grabbing or sticking, bolt locked down nice and tight.
Still plenty of cosmoline all over the parts
bayonette in good shape, still folded, not bent or dinged.
no cracks or breaks in the stock, finish was so-so...but acceptable for a 60 year old rifle.
Flashlighted down the bore and it looked to have nice rifling and not a lot of pitting. There was some light pitting on the top of the barrel close to bolt, not real deep, but i could feel it with my thumbnail.
Numbers on the bolt and the reciever did match.
Stamps were nice and clear (1948 Izhevsk, i brought a copy of the markings with me so i could identify it)

Only thing i didn't check was the cocking piece as it was posted after i left but everything was so solid that i can't imagine there being problems, but i'll check once i take posession of it. Came with the strap/cantine/2 pouches etc. Really pleased with it, can't wait to get it home
