My first AK this weekend

Eastman's gun show is in town this weekend and I am planning on purchasing my first AK there. We went last time they were here and found some dealers with the Century Arms WASR 10 for just under $300. Can anyone share their experience with this firearm and possibly some alternate suggestions? Also, what to look/look out for when inspecting the rifle. Also, I'm trying to keep it under $400. Thanks for the help!

Also, a suggestion of "save some more cash and get an AR instead" is no help. I'll get to that soon enough.

Me and a buddy have the under-folder WASR-10. They work great and have been some really fun guns. His is wood stock and mine is the black polymer.

The only complaint I have is that my front sight was way off when I got it. I whacked it with a 5lb sledge and it straightened up. (try doing that with your AR15's =P).

I have a buddy who just got the full wood stock version with the side scope rail mount. His was super clean but had a few issues. His was sent to him without any kind of feedramp (if it is even supposed to have one that is). Mine has a notch for the bullet to feed up to where his didn't. Mine could have been worn into it as I have put around 500 rounds through it already. He didn't have much ammo, but it seems like it functioned better towards the end of the outing? Maybe it was a wear in issue?

Get one. You won't be disapointed!

get one! i have heard good and bad about the wasr. but check for fit and finish as i understand the differences between two of them can be night and day, and i have heard you should check the front sight block and make sure it isn't canted. i myself bought an egyptian maadi. wish i had bought it FTF but after a few new parts it is a runner!

the Ak is a different animal than the AR. i don't worry about dinging the wood or scratching the metal. i bump fire a thirty round mag every once in awhile, because its FUN. i see the AR as a precision instrument where the AK is a work horse. both are great weapons in their own right, just..well different. i hate the AK vs AR debate, they are both fun, both great weapons.

Got one last year. Mine came with Tapco furniture and trigger group. Shoots well, no problem. Ugly though.

Are you just wanting a gun or do you really want an AK? If you are really jonesing for an AK then dont get a WASR. They are like the low rent version of the AK. AK mags wont fit unless you grind out the bottom of the reciever and then they still wont fit very well. REAL AKs are available at both these links for under $400. And remember you will eat up the price differance in ammo rather quickly, save your bucks for a little longer and get a real AK, you wont regret it. I have a Vector and I love it, it's my go-to gun when I hear a bump in the night.

Ours takes any 30 rnd, 40 rnd, and 75 rnd mag/drum just fine. I guess just make sure you don't pick up a Assault Weapon Ban relic.

Century already does that when they import them. No grinding necessary on the part of the consumer.

Actually, its pretty common to grind the mag well opening on WaSRs. Chinese and Bulgarian mags tend to fit tight. Century still does a lackluster job at hi cap conversions.

I have heard that about the magazine openings being roughly finished when they are converted from single stack. Is that something you can handle fairly easily with a Dremmel?

Also, what does WASR mean?
