Ruger SP101

Is the Ruger SP101 to big to pocket carry? I was going to buy a Taurus model 605 in two weeks but for about $100 more I can get the Ruger. The 605 is on sale for $279 NIB and the SP101 is $400 NIB

That's how I often carry my SP101. In pocket with FIST kydex holster. Youll have to stick with the stock or other short (like CTC) grip.

I pocket-carry a 2 1/4" SP101 2-3 hours practically every day; usually in Dockers and with a speedloader in there, to boot.

Fine little 5-shooters.

Anyone else pocket carry the SP101? It doesn't seem that much bigger than the SW.

I as soon as I get my rebate check, which should be anyday now I will pay off the sp101 I have on layaway. From playing with it in the store, I dont think it would be hard at all to pocket carry. I'm going to get a don hume clip on iwb holster for mine though. Should be pretty good for summer carry.

I found the SP101 to be slightly too large for my taste as a pocket-carry handgun.

But that was a personal preference based off of other items I carry with me on a daily basis.

Size is between the J and K frame Smiths. I carry mine OWB, but in the right pants, I can manage pocket.

I went with a SW 642 .38 spec for both size and weight. I carry it in my pocket and forget it is there. If I were going to get the SP101, I would probably go for a K frame .357 and get an extra shot, though I am not convinced you'll see any real difference in ballistics out of a 2" bbl between .357 and .38. The .357 will make for a prettier light show as so much powder will burn outside the muzzle.

The SP101 is 10 oz heavier than the S&W 642.
That is a lot of weight sitting in your shorts pocket.

Ruger SP101 specs;
Ruger SP101Double Action Revolver (KSP-321XL) Specifications

S&W 642 specs;
Product: Model 642 Revolver=

SP101 barrel is 3/8 of an inch longer than the 642.
SP101 over all length is 5/8 of an inch longer than the 642.

I love my little 642 and have been carrying it since the day I bought it.
Also put CT LG-405 grips on it.
But to be perfectly honest, I can shoot with it just as well with or without the laser on.
I mostly bought the CT grips because the 642 is a nightstand gun for the wife and I.
I bought it for summer concealment.
I can carry it in a cargo pants pocket without a problem.
Although I'm looking for a nice OWB holster for it.

I would go for the Ruger or the S&W over the Taurus............

Excellent info ~ thank you.

I have read about the "lock up" problem aafter the locks were installed on Smith after a certain year. Any trouble with that?
