No problems what so ever.
I've never even engaged the lock.
That key is in the case, I've never even looked at it.
But keep in mind, I've only had her 2 months with around 200 rounds.
I really like this pistol though.
Point and shoot.........
No FTF, FTE, stovepipes, pull the trigger and BANG...........
My first revolver.
Probably not my last.
I'd like to have a nice 44 mag, or maybe 32 mag....................

I consider my 2 1/4 " SP-101 to be about the upper end of the scale for pocket carry, but I do it on occasion with no trouble.

I bought the sp101 for the wife. She won't be packing very much, so the extra weight is actually a slight advantage during shooting. This sp101 is a very pleasent gun to shoot. I don't really have a comparison to the lighter S&W's as far as pleasentry to shoot. It was a focus for me to have the wife enjoy shooting, and not to much recoil bark at the grip. We were planning on getting the Taurus, untill she held the Ruger and the stock grip felt perfect in her hand. Something about the trigger also just felt better with the ruger.

Determine if packing it the main goal, or actually shooting alot. Those could help you decide what would work best for your needs.

Have fun shopping around.

I will admit the heavier weight of the SP101 does make it more comfortable to shoot.
After a box of 50 38sp +P at the range with the 642, I'm ready to move on to something else.

I rented both the SP101 and S&W 642 before I bought the 642.
But for my needs, I chose the lighter of the two.
I also liked the S&W trigger better.
Main reason for the 642 was the weight.
I knew I'd be carrying it a lot more than I would be shooting it.
Both are great choices though.

SP-101 with a 3" barrel, because I'm not "allowed" to carry anyways.

Much more effective in that regard, than a Smith J frame.
