"A cop with a Glock is often his own worse enemy"

Taken from "westcoastcop" on GlockTalk.

" Trivia--> We all bless the Glock pistols for having so few parts, and easy tear down and rebuildability. But did you know why this is so? Gaston Glock, who designed the gun that bears his name, relied heavily on the technology behind the German Heckler and Koch VP 70 submachine gun when creating his weapon, Glocks 1990 U.S. patent shows. Soldiers were not able to quickly tear down and reassemble weapons in the field during battle. So "easy" became the watchword for these weapons designs.

In my 30 years as a cop, I can atest to the following as being a reality...kind of scary at times!

In the mid 1990's, in Detroit and NYC cops shot themselves in alarming numbers with their newly issued Glocks. So many that local Emergency Rooms and Paramedics coined the name for this affliction..."Glock Leg!" A good number of these "victims" sued Glock, and received settlements in secret from Glock. In 8 years, more than 50 lawsuits were settled, with confidentiality agreements being signed by the involved parties.

In Washington DC, nearly 75 percent of the District officers who used their weapons did not meet basic firearms standards for using the Glock semiautomatic handgun, a weapon that requires a high degree of training and skill. There have been more than 120 unintentional discharges of the gun in the past decade; 19 officers have shot themselves or other officers accidentally.

It seems, thankfully, that this was a learning curve, that has resulted in Glock being the premire police duty weapon now. I had a duty gun which was also a "pull the trigger to fire" weapon like glock, the S&W Sigma 9mm, but since I went from 357 revolvers without any safeties, it was a natural progression to the pistol for me! I think the departments were so anxious to get the new Glocks out to their officers, that full re-training was rushed, and incomplete. And as evidenced by the video regarding the DEA agent that shot him self in the foot while demostrating gun safety to school children, some people just are clueless!

In my department, several times Officers blew their red light bars clean off of the roof of their patrol units when, after not checking their vertically mounted and locked down Remington 12 ga shotguns, absent mindedly played with the guns trigger and discharged it through the roof! One guy tugged on his Glock to remove it from his locker, and shot a series of bullet holes (one bullet) through several Police Department walls. Boys will be boys! "

God, the guy that wrote this needs to learn how to spell, use correct grammar, sentence structure, punctuate, and capitalize properly.

I bet his traffic tickets hold up well in court.

I think this has more to do with the low standard of intelligence in NYC and Detroit police departments than it does with the design of the weapon.

Either that or you've got a bunch of officers who have been coddled into bad gun-handling habits by carrying weapons equipped with manual safeties....Glocks are not forgiving of the casual pull of the trigger or careless reholstering.

I therefore reiterate my statement.

Brilliant Idea lets blame the guns for the shootings because they have a mind of their own and when they want to shoot us they will cause they are evil. Sounds like a fellow californian wrote that and seeing that Glocks probably wont be sold here any longer he must be in hog heaven =/

LOL

Sorry, I am preparing for an English mid-term exam, and I am really anal about English right now.

Not to mention, I am tired of all the foreign phucks in our country bastardizing our language. (phucks was mis-spelled intentionally)
