Is a 44Magnum revolver overkill for a home defense choice?

Use a Short bbl Shotgun for home defense, Remember every time you pull the trigger on a shotgun you're sending either 9 or 12- 5/16 dia projectiles depending on .oo or .ooo buckshot at the Turd that just broke into your home!

I just shot a friend's 44mag rifle this morning and I can't imagine being able to follow up with that. That thing's got some kick. None of us could get off a 4th shot, it hurt so much.

I would (and do) go with the shotty. My Mossberg's got some 00 in it right now. I blew away a printer with it, so I know it'll leave a mark.

If your house is large enough to play football in maybe
The problem with that round occur's when you miss the intended target and shoot the neighbor 5 houses away.

I'd go with the shotgun.

Depending on your specific situation, a .44 mag might work if you stay away from full power .44 magnum loads and stick with 44 Specials. The muzzle blast and fireball from even a 6" .44 magnum is problematic in a low or no light situation.

Not the ideal caliber but can be made to work if you chose your ammo with care.

Yes, in my opinion. My home defense pistol is an XD45 Service loaded with hollow points.

Well, consider that a properly loaded hot .44 can blow through both shoulders of a deer and even elk, i would say its a bit too much for people. Not to mention the fireball and noise.

That depends on what you load it with. If you load it with 300 grain hard cast bullets at 1200 fps then yes its overkill and a overpenetration hazard. But if you load it with 200 grain Speer golddots then its not bad, not bad at all.

Ditto. Like said earlier, with a .44 Mag you'll blow through your walls, the neighbors car, through their walls, and probably get lodged in a fridge the next town over. Ok, maybe that was a little overkill but you get the point. Stay away from your high velocity rounds for home defense.
