Looking for a good full size .357, suggestions?

For as long as I have been collecting, I have been wanting a 4" blued Colt Python. Obviously, I don't have the grand to drop on one and I would like to be able to carry it in the woods and not cringe at the thought of dropping/shooting it. In other words, I don't want a safe queen, but I would like something similar to a Python.

I looked at the Taurus tracker series, but I'm not big on the shape of the grip or the trigger guard. Any other suggestions?

Smith and Wesson 686. Have one myself, great firearm, decent price.

The ruger GP series of guns are nice too. Very well built firearms.

Best revolver ever made = Colt Python. The Python is in a class unto itself.

If you wanna spend less then $500 then get a Ruger GP100

Relatively low price (compared to S&W and obviously a python) and built like a tank

I was just at a gunshop the other day handling .357 revolvers in my price range (Ruger and Taurus)....The taurus felt pretty good but after handling the Ruger next the Taurus felt "loose" in comparison. The action on the Ruger was very tight, solid and smooth

If the guy wants something to not worry about dropping in the woods and getting banged up and scratched and such, then the Ruger. As the last user mentioned, they are tanks. Too bad they only come in .357 and not .45ACP or I would have bought one over my Taurus. And I got a deal on my S&W 686 so I have to put off owning one for a while. They shoot nice, though.

I can't speak for the Tracker chambered in .357 but my 45 shoots nice. But the grips are weird, not much available for aftermarket to change them and the gun is a bit lighter than I like. The satin finish is nice if you prefer that over polished.

I know this doesn't help but.......
this is my Python that my Dad bought in 1965.
It is still NIB, never been shot other than the factory test target.

Hmmmmm, thought I had pics of my 4" S&W 66 in stainless
That'd be my choice. You can find these pretty reasonable, or the 686 since it is "beefed" up.

Smith, Ruger . . . both make damn fine guns. Taurus has a lot to offer. Taurus has come a long, long ways since they first started out. I have two Smiths in 357, Mod 60 and a 66. Ruger is a Security Six which they don't make any more. Ruger GP 100 is hot stuff.

For a "field gun" I like the Smith 629, 4" bbl. in 44 mag. Big enough for cougar, bear defense etc out in the woods, and can be downloaded for a BIG carry gun for general defense.
