Hi-Point Firearms
I have a friend who is looking for his first handgun. Problem is he's limited as to the money he can spend. He's set himself a $200 limit. He is looking at the "elegantly designed" line of Hi-Point Firearms. I'm not very familiar with Hi-Point. What is everyone's take on their line? Any other suggestions for a sub $200 handgun?

I'd tell your friend to save his money for another month or so. I don't own any, but I've shot a few hi-points and I was not impressed. I've also NEVER heard of anyone having one that was trouble free.
If he can save another $100 dollars he can get himself a decent Taurus revolver and he'll be a lot better off.

The hipoints are night stand guns for people who can't afford better... I wouldn't compete with one, but they DO shoot... not pretty or anything, but they do shoot... Also if he can get ahold of a little over 300 he can get ahold of a G.I. Spec 1911 which he can build on and customize from now till he gets it like he wants it.. thats what I'd do...

They go bang every time, from the ones I've been around. I'd probably look at a Bersa 380 first, or something used.

Used. It's the only way to go if you only got $200. Stay away from the Highpoints. They are crap. Sorry, but I think it would be foolish to waste good money on such a crappy gun. They are bulky, unwieldly and are "Jammomatics" of the first order. I'd buy the sloppiest, gut shot, scratched up, crapper of a S&W I could find before I would by a Highpoint.

he would be ok getting one for his first gun. i also got my bersa for 300 and am very happy with that. if he saves up another $100 it would open up more different guns for him. but if he is absolutly set at 200 get a hi-point and odds are if he sells it he wont take too much of a loss. have him check out the carbines they are FUN

i sold my month old smith and wesson sigma for 200
so used guns are an option but if they break alot of the time they dont cover it but at least a hi-point has a warrenty and a good costomer service |

for a little more, he could get a kel-tec if he is looking for a carry gun. Otherwise here is my thing about hi-points:
I saw one blow up... It was almost brand new. THe slide broke in half.. So it didnt actualy blow up, but the slides are not forged... They are pot metal, you know the grainy stuff. But their customer service was excelent, and they replaced that gun and threw in some mags.. Conclusion: Would I own one. NO, would I reccomend it. No, but if its all you can get well then its better than nothing. I would tel him to look at a used/surplus firearm. I would rather have my CZ-52 at my side, even though you cant do fast mag changes with it. |
