You can easily find S&W police trade-ins for $250 and under. Sometimes used Ruger P-series semiauto's, also. Either would be a better choice. I'm not against cheap guns, but you can get more gun for $200 than a Hi-Point. I wouldn't be so concerned about it being his first handgun, as I would it being his ONLY handgun.

I thought you could get a hi-point for $149. But they do come with a map of all the local liquor stores.

One of my shooting buddies has the .380. last time we took it out shooting.....we put about 200 rounds through it. Jammed ever second or third mag. Not overly impressed with it. But for under $200 bucks I wouldn't expect much more. Don't know how well or how often he cleaned it though. So if your friend would clean it a lot he may be ok. Like many others have said I would put another 100 bucks into it or try and find a better used gun. Just my 2 cents.

I had a Hi Point C9 and it shot pretty well. It was a little heavy, not pretty to look at but it could shoot. Never had a problem with mine, but they do have the best warranty in the business.

Thanks for all the info.
My friend has never owned a gun and just wanted some opinions on the Hi-Point line. I've always taken this guy with me to the range and the bug finally bit him this last trip. He shot my Bersa 380 and the XD45 and there was no looking back! I'll pass this thread along to him. Thanks again, gang!

no problems w/ the 2 hi points in the family. Had to run a few hundred rounds through them to get them to cycle reliably, but that's not uncommon even w/ nicer guns. They do tend to not like weak powder charges like umc and some wolf stuff I've shot, but winchester white and all the primary cartridge company rounds like Remington, Winchester, Federal, Geco, and even S&B ran just fine after the break-in was done.

I love my Hi-Point, It's a great gun that I love to take with me when I am out with friends boating. Or if i am out on a rafting/canoe trip. It cost me less than $200 bucks, It goes bang, and if the thing get dropped into 10-20 feet of water, I probably wont sweat it to much. It always goes bang, and out t0 10-15 yds it is accurate enough to stop a threat.

Go to a gun show and get a mil surplus makarov clone like a Polish p-63/64. They are less than $200 and are a hell of a lot nicer than a low-point.

I have shot a few hi-points and they went bang everytime, there is an article I think it was in combat handgun magazine where they did a review and found them to be pretty good. He said it wasnt a BBQ(something you would show off for looks) but it worked well. And you cant beat their customer support.
