Walther P22 - cleaning woes...
I purchased a P22 about 2 weeks ago and really love shooting it. It's a blast to run 500 rounds it at $10...
My problem is cleaning it... I think my XD has me spoiled in that it's VERY easy to take apart and clean. The problem that I was having was the guide rod/spring going onto the slide correctly and then getting it to mate with the frame... all while not bending the spring. My solution was to hold the spring down on the guide rod, put the rod through the slide and then hold it in place there... 1/2 mount the slide onto the frame, let the guide rod go and HOPE that it went in preperly. I must've tried... 6, 7, 8+ times to get it in last night and got more and more frustrated with it each time. Can someone lend a hand to a newbie (or at least someone that has been spoiled with how easy the XD makes it)?

A guide rod extension should have come with the p22. It's a rod about 1.5 inches long, same diameter as the guide rod. Just slide the spring over the rod, slide the extension into the end of the spring, put the end of the guide rod into "detent" under the chamber of the pistol, and the slide should go on without much trouble at all.
I had the same problem when I first disassembled my p22. In fact, that effing spring has had several trips across the room when my grip slips on it. It's a tough little bugger to hold onto when the spring is compressed (another method for putting the slide back on involves compressing the spring so the guide rod sticks out the front of the slide, holding onto the tip of the guide rod sticking out, put the slide back on the weapon, and slowly release the guide rod directing it into the detent). joe

I have a P22 and found a little trick that make it a lot easier. Stick a cleaning rod with no attachment on the end through the hole in the front of the slide and down through the spring until it touches the guide rod and then push the slide back. It is SO much easier that way.

Hmmm - I'll have the check the bag of extras that came with the P22 and see what I've got there... I knew there had to be an easier way!
Thanks for the info guys.

I have that gun too!
Cleaning is a PITA! Does yours hang up with hollow points? I polished the feed ramp and it fixed that problem. I will try the cleaning rod trick instead of that stupid plastic rod in the parts bag. Fun little plinker though!

You should have bought a Ruger MK III, it is so easy to reassemble.
I have to use that cleaning tool kit when reassembling my SKS. You have to push on the smaller guide rod within the larger one so you can get that frigging huge spring locked in place. SurvivorSKS boards shows how to do the whole thing. |

Yeah, just use the included plastic guiderod extension. Trust the rest of us, it makes a world of difference. If you can't find the extension or would rather use the trick that scurtis mentioned, it'll definately work. My P22 doesn't hang up on hollowpoints, although polishing the feedramp could fix this problem. I was having a problem with mine the other day because I wore out the recoil spring. If you have problems with yours, like the slide starts to go, but locks up and you can give it a little push and it'll go fine, you might have the same problem. The major determining factor of which of the 2 it might be is round count.
