I really like the cz 452/453 they have a feel of a real gun. The cheap savages stocks seem kinda......ah cheap. I have no doubt that they are great shooting guns - I just not in love with the stocks.

You know, this crap happens with in-breeding. You can only hope the unfortunate, screwed up love child would take themselves out of the gene pool when they discover electrical outlets and butter knives or start huffing paint when they're 7 or 8 but every once in a while a truly magnificent specimen makes it to adulthood to display for the world just how freaking stupid they really are.

Savage 93R17, Mueller APV
Probably the best price to performance deal in firearms up to 220 yards.

That's definitely a tempting combo - I think I jump on the Savage that jnclement suggested and snag this scope. Great idea for a ground squirrel rifle.

Thanks!

My secret is out. But hopefully some day I can use my engineering degree and 27 years of oilfield experience to take advantage of $75 a barrel oil, and afford a Ruger. Hey, maybe I could sell my Belgian Sweet 16, or pull something out of the back of one of the gun safes.

I have a Marlin .17 HMR with the heavy barrel and I paid 169.00 for it 2 years ago. I put a 4x16 scope on it. That little rifle is a tack driver and a blast to shoot ammo is a little expensive.

A friend I shoot with has a Marlin in HM2 he shoots that produces amazing groups. HM2 ammo is about half as expensive as 17HMR.
I'd still go 93r17 though....

I just purchased a New 93R17 pre-accu trigger from Dick's last night for $99.97 in .17HMR!!! Can't wait to shoot it. They also had the MachII in .17Mach2 for $79. I should have picked up both, but the fiance would have killed me. Yes it's the cheap synthetic stock, but you can't beat that price, $100 for the 93R17 with the heavy barrell, AWESOME!. Now time to find some glass for it.

93R17FV heavy barreled, blued, synthetic stocked .17 HMR $169
Tasco 6-24x 43MM scope $49
Acraglass Gel glass bedding kit $20
Beartooth neoprene cheek piece $18

Watching your kid whack his first groundhog = Priceless!!!!

The Ruger and CZ are nicer looking guns than the Savage or the Marlins. But they won't out shoot them. If you have the money and you want the nicer looking gun by all means buy the Ruger or CZ.

But I think you would be better off spending the majority of your money on some decent glass and then get a Savage or Marlin. My Tasco is a cheap scope and the colors wash out and optics aren't great about 18X or so.

If I had $500 to spend on a .17 HMR I'd put about $300 of it into the optics.
