Someone look at my ARMS#40 please.

Just a dumb question but whats with the cut peep sight. I never saw this style in any of their ad's or on other guns with the arms#40. The top looks like a rear pistol sight so what purpose would this serve? At first I thought it was cut to lower the profile, then i noticed the hash marks are painted. (Also threw in a pic of the completed gun,.....$850 doorstop to some, works great for me and is a blast to shoot!)

Just a thought and it really doesn't make much sense to me but it looks almost like you would use it as a rear sight for the reddot... Again jsut a random guess here.

A.R.M.S. #40 - BUIS 200-600 Meter

The standard ARMS #40 rear back up iron sight is equipped with both 250-300 meter and 500-600 meter aperatures. The 500-600 meter aperture includes a built in horizon line that helps lead distant targets and lets the shooter square the rifle to counter windage offsets if the rifle is inadvertently tilted. When engaged, the sight springs up to allow immediate use of the larger close combat aperture.

This is the descripttion on the ARMS 40

here are pics of the 2 of the 3 versions of this sight
the original #40 is the one on the left, the middle and right are the #40A2

Not to take anything away from what mvician gave, but here is a little additional from what I googled. Some of it is the same info he provided.

Quote:
A.R.M.S. #40 STAND ALONE FLIP UP REAR SIGHT 500-600 METERS
The A.R.M.S.® Stand Alone Flip-up sight, utilizes the same well proven concept as the rear sight on the SWAN® Sleeve system. The unique design of the spring loaded rear sight, ensures constant battery action and repeat zero. The sight is held in the locked down position by a quick release lever, that prevents the sight from being accidentally engaged, but is as fast as a trigger to release even with arctic mittens. The initial elevation zero utilizes the standard M16/M4 front sight bead. When the sight is released into battery the 250-300 meter aperture is ready for immediate close combat use. For longer ranges the leaf sight aperture is rotated to access the 500-600capability with the built in horizon line feature that helps lead distant targets and lets the shooter square the rifle to counter windage offsets, if the rifle is inadvertently tilted. Other type rear iron fold-down sights require the shooter to push it into position, which means they can be accidentally knocked down at the worst time. The A.R.M.S. spring loaded flip-up sights never let you down, because they're designed to always be there even when going thru brush or being dropped.

You know, this crap happens with in-breeding. You can only hope the unfortunate, screwed up love child would take themselves out of the gene pool when they discover electrical outlets and butter knives or start huffing paint when they're 7 or 8 but every once in a while a truly magnificent specimen makes it to adulthood to display for the world just how freaking stupid they really are.
